IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph compares men and women of various age groups who did regular physical exercise in Australia in 2010.
Overall, the highest percentage was observed among women throughout the period, while the percentage of men increased at the end of the period. The figure fluctuated for both genders throughout the period, with women's highest percentage.
The maximum number of men performing physical activity was among 15 to 24 age groups, which was about 52.8%. The figure decreased over time with increasing age groups up to 35 to 44. The number again started rising, with 43.1% among 45 to 54, 45.1% in 55 to 64 and then reached to around 46.7% at the end of the period.
On the other hand, women's physical performance represented 47.7% in 15 to 24 age groups, which increased to 53.3% in 45 to 54 age groups and reached it's peak, before declining again in among 65 and over aged people, to aproximately 47.1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and report several accurate figures, including the male peak of 52.8%, the male low of 39.5%, and the female peak of 53.3%. You also describe the broad rise and fall in women’s activity and the later increase among men. However, the overview is not fully accurate: women did not have the highest percentage throughout, since men led in the 15–24 group. The statement that the figure fluctuated for both genders “throughout the period” is also too general, and the comparison between the sexes across age groups is underdeveloped. To strengthen the response, make the overview precise and directly compare the main pattern: men were higher only among the youngest adults, while women led in the remaining groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing men and women. The sequence within the male paragraph is easy to follow, moving from the youngest group to the oldest, and transitions such as “On the other hand” signal the shift to female data. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger progression. However, the overview repeats the idea of women’s highest figure, and “throughout the period” is an imprecise reference for age categories rather than time. The comparison between the two series is also mostly left implicit. Avoid repetition and use clearer links between corresponding age groups so the reader can see how the figures relate.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of chart-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “decreased,” “rising,” “peak,” and “declining,” which generally communicates the trends. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “was observed” and “represented.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this data: “the maximum number of men” refers to a count rather than a percentage, and “women’s physical performance” does not clearly mean participation in regular activity. “Throughout the period” is also unsuitable when describing age groups. Spelling errors such as “aproximately” and “it's” reduce accuracy. Prefer precise terms such as “proportion” or “participation rate,” and use consistent wording for the activity being measured.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and time-related phrases such as “before declining.” Most meanings remain clear, and the response is generally readable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “among 15 to 24 age groups,” the age-group construction needs a clearer form, such as “among those aged 15 to 24.” The phrase “reached to around 46.7%” has an unnecessary preposition, while “reached it's peak” has an incorrect possessive form and article pattern. The final sentence also has an awkward structure in “declining again in among 65 and over aged people.” Review age-group phrasing, possessives, and verb patterns; these corrections would make the otherwise understandable sentences more controlled.
