Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who engaged in regular physical activity in 2010.
In general, the proportion of female who did exercise regularly for the most age groups experienced considerable fluctuations, while male gender showed an increasing percentage of doing regular physical activities. The most noticeable feature is that men and women of aged 65 and over stood at the same rate.
Looking at bar graph in the detail, it is clear that female of age group 15 to 24 accounted for 52.8% percentage and this figure moved towards a significant decline across all other ages and reached at 46.7% rate.
In contrast, male age group of 15 to 24 stood at 47.7% percentage who did regular physical activities and experienced a slight increase of 53% percentage to the age group of 55 to 64. This percentage showed a slight decrease in doing exercise at the age of 65 and over and reached 46.7%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the chart’s subject and attempts an overview, but several central figures and trends are misreported, which substantially limits how accurately it fulfils the task. The overview says men’s activity increased, although the male rate fell from 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds to 39.5% among 35–44-year-olds before rising; it also says the sexes had the same rate at 65 and over, when the figures were 46.7% and 47.1%. The detailed paragraphs repeatedly reverse the series: 52.8% is assigned to women rather than men, and the female trend is described as declining despite rising to a peak of 53.3%. To improve, verify each series and report the main crossover and contrasting trends accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Connectors such as “In general” and “In contrast” help signal the intended organisation. However, the progression is weakened because the overview and details do not consistently match, and the two body paragraphs appear to describe the opposite gender series. This makes it difficult to follow the comparisons, even though the reader can identify the broad topic. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated references to “percentage” and “this figure.” Grouping the data clearly by gender or by the point where the trends cross, then using accurate references such as “the male rate” and “the female figure,” would make the sequence more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “decline,” “in contrast,” and “stood at,” and the chart topic remains understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or awkward, such as “female of age group,” “male gender,” “52.8% percentage,” and “experienced considerable fluctuations.” These reduce precision and make the description less natural. The phrase “moved towards a significant decline” is also an imprecise way to describe a changing data trend. Aim for concise chart language, for example “the proportion of women,” “the male rate,” and “rose gradually,” while avoiding redundant wording such as “percentage rate.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There is some sentence variety, including a complex overview sentence with “while” and a comparison introduced by “In contrast.” The opening sentence is also grammatically clear. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some passages awkward or difficult to interpret. Examples include “the proportion of female,” “men and women of aged 65 and over,” and “female of age group 15 to 24.” The sentence “experienced a slight increase of 53% percentage to the age group” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the increase and the figure. Use complete, controlled patterns such as “Among women aged 15–24, the figure was…” and check that subjects and verbs agree throughout.
