Student answer (Band 5.0)
This bar graph illustrates the proportion of daily active lifestyle in different age groups of Australian population in 2010.
Overall, the age group of 45 to 54 years female population reached 53.3% which is the highest figure of all. The lowest one is 39.5% among male in the age group of 34 to 44 years.

The youngest group is quite similar to the highest mid- aged group, however, the male's in the group reached the 2nd most significant place in the graph with a percentage of 52.5.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify two relevant extremes: the female 45–54 group is highest at 53.3%, and men aged 35–44 are lowest at 39.5%. However, the overview is incomplete and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the youngest male figure is 52.8%, not 52.5%; 52.5% is the female figure for ages 35–44. The claim that the 65-and-over figures are “constant” overlooks the difference between 46.7% and 47.1%, while the description of 45–54 as “most fluctuating” is not a clear comparison. The response also contains only 121 words, below the required 150, limiting its coverage of the chart. Report the main gender pattern across the age groups and support it with accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview, and a further paragraph, and the reader can identify the main topic. However, the progression is limited: the final paragraph moves between the oldest group, the 45–54 group, and the youngest group without a clear organising principle. The opening “While” creates an incomplete sentence, and “The graph presents a constant figure…” is not clearly connected to the following comparison. Use a more systematic order, such as describing the male pattern first and then the female pattern, or comparing the sexes within age groups. Clear links such as “By contrast” and “In the oldest group” would help make relationships between figures easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “age group,” “highest figure,” and “percentage,” so the chart is generally recognisable. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “fluctuating.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing data: “daily active lifestyle” does not accurately express regular physical activity, and “reached the 2nd most significant place” is awkward. “Constant figure” is also unsuitable when comparing two slightly different percentages. Aim for precise chart language and avoid decorative phrases that obscure the comparison. For example, describe figures as “the proportion who exercised regularly” and say that a value “was higher than” another. This would make your meaning clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including an overview sentence with a superlative and a contrast introduced by “however.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical control remain. “While, the most fluctuating one…” is a fragment because the clause beginning with “While” is not completed; join it to a main clause or remove “While.” In “the male's in the group,” the apostrophe is incorrect, and the plural subject should be expressed without it. The phrase “in different age groups of Australian population” also needs an article or a plural form. Work on complete clauses, articles, and consistent plural forms, while keeping comparisons in straightforward, accurate sentences.
