Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main comparison—that women were more active in most age groups, while men led among 15–24-year-olds—and include several relevant figures. However, the report only partially covers the chart: the overview is unclear about the overall pattern, and the account of women’s figures omits the middle age groups’ progression and misstates the final value as 46.7% rather than 47.1%. There are also inaccuracies in the men’s account: the 25–34 figure is 42.2%, not 42.8%, and the 35–44 low point is not reported. Develop a clearer overview and compare the full age-group trends, selecting accurate key values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the data paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: for example, the men’s account jumps from the 25–34 group to 55–64 without explaining the 35–44 and 45–54 figures. Linking phrases such as “furthermore,” “whereas,” and “in contrast” are used, but some connections are unclear or mechanically attached to incomplete sentences. Make the sequence of age groups explicit and use comparisons to connect related figures, rather than relying mainly on transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “figure,” “age group,” “declined,” “increase,” and “peaked,” so the reader can generally understand the intended trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “the amount of Australian male and female,” “followed declined trend,” and “a little increased.” These errors sometimes make the description less clear or natural. Spelling slips such as “litle” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of chart-description expressions—for example, “the proportion of men and women,” “fell to,” and “rose gradually”—and check that each verb or noun fits the trend being described.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons introduced by “whereas” and “in contrast.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “women were more active than men exceptional in young age group” lacks a clear grammatical connection, while “the figure for 15 to 24 age group was the highest” needs an article and clearer phrasing. Several sentences begin with fragments, such as “followed declined trend,” and full stops and commas are often missing or misplaced. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and use a consistent past-tense structure when reporting the 2010 data.
