Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. In the age of 15 to 24 years, 52.8% of males were doing physical activity which is xthe only higher than females' 47.7%. From 25 to 34 years of age, males are significantly less likely to physical activity which is reflected in the chart, 42.2% for males and 48.9% of females. From 35 to 44 years of age, the percentage of doing physical activity among males has decreased drastically to 39.5% but increased in females to 52.5%. Next, in the age group of 45 to 54, percentage of male doing physical activity is 43.1 and for female 53.3 which is still increasing. In 55 to 64 age group the ,ale participants have slightly increased to 45.1% and the female percentage slightly decreased to flat 53. In the last stage from 65 and older the percentage of physical activity among male and female are nearly same 46.7% and 47.1% consecutively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You report several accurate figures and comparisons, including the male lead among 15–24-year-olds and the near-equal rates in the oldest group. However, the overview is incomplete and partly inaccurate: female participation does not rise steadily with age, since it peaks at 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds before falling. The main overall pattern—that women were more active than men in every group except the youngest—is not clearly stated. Some descriptions also lack precision, such as saying male activity “decreased drastically” without setting this against the later recovery. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the key contrasts and describe the female and male trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the age groups in chart order, so the reader can generally locate each comparison, and the opening identifies the chart’s subject. However, most information is presented as one long paragraph, with no clear separation between an overview and the detailed figures. The repeated sequence markers “From,” “Next,” and “In the last stage” make the progression mechanical, while the final “In conclusion” repeats a broad trend rather than synthesising the most important comparisons. Some links are also unclear, particularly “which is still increasing,” where the reference is not explicit. Organise the report into an introduction, a brief overview, and grouped detail, using clearer references and fewer repetitive transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary such as “percentage,” “age group,” “increased,” and “decreased,” and the figures are usually expressed in a way that is understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “doing physical activity,” “the male bar indicator,” and “flat 53.” “Clear rise” also overstates the female trend because it later declines. There are noticeable spelling and typing slips, such as “xthe” and “,ale,” which reduce the polish of the report. Aim for more natural collocations and precise trend language, for example, “participated in regular physical activity,” “reached a peak,” and “fell slightly.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer comparative sentences, and the reader can understand most of the intended meaning. However, errors occur frequently in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. For example, “males are significantly less likely to physical activity” is missing a suitable verb pattern, while “the percentage of doing physical activity among males has decreased” uses an awkward and faulty structure. There are also problems with articles and number, as in “percentage of male” and “for female,” and the sentence beginning “In the age of 15 to 24 years” is not formed naturally. Tense shifts between “were doing” and “are” also weaken consistency. Practise accurate comparative clauses and maintain past tense when describing the 2010 data.
