IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of physical activity done frequently by both genders of six age groups in Australia in the year 2010.

Overall, the percentage of physical activity varied with age. The proportion of physical activity among female increased steadily with age except for the 65 and over age group, while male recorded a fluctuation with increase in age. Male between 15 to 24 age took part in the highest physical task compare to other age groups, while the highest proportion for female recorded in 55 to 64 age groups.

Looking at the chart, only 47.7% of female between 15 to 24 age involved in physical task regularly, which was the lowest among all age groups, while male recorded at around 52.8%. In 25 to 34 age groups, the figure was 42.2% for male and 48.9% for female. The highest discrepancy showed between men and women in the age group of 35 to 44, which was 39.5% and 52.5%, respectively.

By contrast, the lowest difference in the percentage of physical activity showed in 65 and over aged group, following 46.7% and 47.1%, respectively for male and female. The female of 45 to 54 age group recorded in 53.3% physical task whereas only 43.1% of male took part. In addition, the figure is almost similar for 55 to 64 age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main overall contrast: women’s activity rates are generally higher across most age groups, while men’s rate falls and then rises. It also selects useful comparisons, including the male peak at 15–24, the female peak at 45–54, and the close figures for those aged 65 and over. Most reported figures are accurate. However, the overview says women’s rate “increased steadily with age,” which overlooks the slight fall from 53.3% at 45–54 to 53.0% at 55–64, and it incorrectly places the female peak at 55–64. The final comparison for that group is also left vague. More precise coverage of these details would make the summary more complete and consistently accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of comparisons. Its progression from the younger groups to the older groups is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the chart,” and “By contrast” help signal the organisation. This coherent arrangement is a strength. Some connections and references are less clear, however. For example, “following 46.7% and 47.1%, respectively” makes the comparison harder to process, and “the figure is almost similar” does not specify which figures or how they compare. The repeated use of “age group” also makes the flow somewhat mechanical. Use clearer references and state the comparison directly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a chart, with relevant terms such as “proportion,” “percentage,” “highest discrepancy,” and “recorded.” There is some attempt to vary wording, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context. “Physical activity done frequently” and “physical task” do not express regular exercise naturally, while “both genders of six age groups” is an awkward description of the chart’s categories. “Highest discrepancy showed” is also an imprecise collocation. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer standard chart language such as “participated in regular physical activity,” “rate,” “was highest,” and “the largest gender gap.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple statements and more complex comparisons, including clauses with “while” and “which,” so it shows some structural range. The main trends and figures remain understandable despite some grammatical errors. These include missing articles or prepositions in “only 47.7% of female between 15 to 24 age involved,” the agreement error in “the highest proportion for female recorded,” and the awkward construction “the female of 45 to 54 age group recorded in 53.3%.” The sentence about the 65-and-over group also has an unclear structure around “following … respectively.” Aim to use complete, well-formed comparison patterns—for example, “Among women aged 15–24, the figure was 47.7%, compared with 52.8% for men”—and check articles, agreement, and verb patterns.
