IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

This is a demographical representation of australian men and women of different age groups who were active and performed regular physical activity in the year 2010.

The horizontal axis shows the population divided into different age groups while the vertical axis shows the percentage of people in that age group who were physically active.

The overall trend in the graph shows women to be more active than men in all age groups except in the teenage.

In the teenage years and early twenties, 52.8% of the men and 47.7% of women were found to be active.

From 25 to 34 years, only 42.2% of men while 48.9% of women were activiely engaged in physical activity daily showing women to be more active.

In the age catefory of 35-44 years, the number of men doing regular activity decreased to 39.5 while a astonishing 52.5% of women were seen having a workout daily marking a dramatic rise in activity with increasing age.

This trend was observed also in the people aged 45-54, where only 43.1% of gents while 53.3% of ladies were seen having done some type of physical exertion on aregular basis.

The numbers for the age bracket of 55 to 64 years were almost same as the previous age column with 45.1% of men and 53% of women did regular physical activity.

for 65 and older, the number of men and women doing any sort of exercise or physical labour were nearly identical, being 46.7 and 47.1 percent respectively.

Overall, men being active in their early years showed a decline in physical activity with passage of years while the ladies didn't give up and continued to power through.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the chart’s main comparison accurately: women recorded higher activity rates in every age group except 15–24, and the figures you report match the data. The overview also captures the contrasting patterns, with men’s rate falling before recovering and women’s rate generally rising to middle age before declining. This gives the response a clear, relevant summary supported by specific figures. To make the key features more fully developed, state the overall extremes explicitly: men peaked at 52.8% among the youngest group and reached their low of 39.5% at 35–44, while women peaked at 53.3% at 45–54. Some descriptions, such as “dramatic rise” and “continued to power through,” overstate or interpret the data; use neutral comparisons instead.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows a sensible order: it introduces the chart, gives an overview, and then compares the age groups from youngest to oldest. This makes the information easy to follow, and phrases such as “From 25 to 34 years” and “for 65 and older” help signal progression. However, the body reads as a sequence of similar age-by-age statements, so the organisation is somewhat mechanical. Grouping the figures into broader patterns—for example, the younger groups where men lead or rates are close, followed by the groups where women lead—would create stronger synthesis. The final sentence repeats the overview rather than adding a concise concluding comparison, and “this trend” is not fully precise because the two sexes follow different patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the chart, including “decline,” “decreased,” “age bracket,” and “nearly identical.” These choices help communicate comparisons and changes. However, several expressions are either inaccurate for a formal data summary or unnecessarily varied: “demographical representation,” “gents,” “ladies,” “having a workout daily,” and “physical labour” do not describe the chart’s measure precisely. The chart reports regular physical activity, not necessarily daily workouts or physical labour. There are also spelling errors such as “activiely” and “catefory,” and “a astonishing” is an incorrect word form. Prefer consistent, precise terms such as “men,” “women,” “participation in regular physical activity,” and “rate.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the comparisons remain understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “From 25 to 34 years” combines two figures with a contrast, while the final age-group sentence clearly compares the rates. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in clause construction and agreement. In “The numbers … were almost same … with 45.1% of men and 53% of women did regular physical activity,” the article is missing before “same,” and the “with” phrase does not fit the following finite verb; write, for example, “The figures were almost the same …, with 45.1% of men and 53% of women doing regular activity.” Also use “a” rather than “an” before “astonishing,” and capitalise the opening “For” in the final paragraph. More consistent control of these patterns would strengthen accuracy.
