Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and includes several figures, but its account of the data is substantially inaccurate, which makes the main features unreliable. For example, it assigns 48.9% to men and 42.2% to women in the 25–34 group, when these figures belong to women and men respectively; it also reverses the sexes for the 35–44 and older groups. The overview claims men were more active in every group except the youngest, whereas women exceeded men in every group from 25–34 onwards. The response is also below the required 150 words. To improve, check each bar against its legend, then give a concise, accurate overview of the overall pattern and key comparisons before selecting supporting figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces the chart, groups some age ranges into paragraphs, and ends with an overview. Phrases such as “In the next two groups” and “For older age groups” help signal progression. However, the comparisons are difficult to follow because the male and female figures are repeatedly assigned to the wrong groups, and the final overview conflicts with the details. The overview would work better near the start, followed by clearly organised comparisons that consistently identify each sex. Paragraphing is present, but the progression is weakened by the inaccurate references and by abrupt transitions between age ranges. Use explicit labels such as “women” and “men” alongside each figure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “age group,” “participation,” “rate,” and “peaked,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unsuitable for an academic report: “gents” is too informal, “average” does not describe the percentages shown, and “daily physical activity” changes the chart’s meaning from regular activity. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “ioncreased,” “steadly,” and “diffrance,” as well as inconsistent forms such as “womens.” Aim for precise, neutral terms and check spelling carefully. For example, use “men and women,” “percentage,” and “regularly active” rather than informal or misleading alternatives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer comparative sentences, such as “In the next two groups, the gap widened significantly.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but grammatical control is uneven. There are errors in sentence construction and agreement, including “men participation peaked,” which needs a possessive form, and “the diffrance are smaller,” where the verb does not agree with the singular noun. Missing spaces after commas and inconsistent punctuation also make some sentences harder to read. The opening phrase “the average of Australian gents and females in various age level” is not grammatically well formed. Use complete, direct sentence patterns, check singular/plural agreement, and proofread punctuation and spacing.
