IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar graph shows the percentage of regular activities doing by the both men and women in 2010, and compares between the age group of 15 to 65 years. The percentage for women and men is represented by the solid black and grey bar respectively.

Looking into the detail, male younster are more active in the regular physical activities than the female younster of age 15 to 24 years. The value for both men and women are approximately 53% and 48% respectively. But the trend have changed for next age group lies between 25 to 35 years. A significant change has observed in the age group of 25 to 34 years which is higher for the women, and the value is approximately 49%. The very highest value for the women in the graph is approximately 53% and for the men is fifty two point eight percent.

On the other hand, the trend is showing the same result which is approximately 47% for both the men and the women lies in the age group of 65 years and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and reports a few relevant figures, including the male lead among 15–24-year-olds and the female figure of about 49% for ages 25–34. However, it addresses the task only partially: there is no clear overview of the main pattern across the age groups, and several important comparisons are omitted. For example, women exceed men in every group from 25–34 to 65 and over, while men reach their low point at 35–44 before rising; these central trends are not explained. The claim that both sexes have approximately 47% at 65 and over is also inaccurate: the figures are 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women. Select the main trends and compare them accurately rather than focusing on isolated values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction is followed by detail and a final comparison. Linking expressions such as “But” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The second paragraph moves from the youngest group to the next group, then to the highest values without explaining how these comparisons relate to the overall pattern. The final paragraph introduces only the oldest group and does not provide a concluding overview. Some references are also unclear, as in “the trend is showing the same result,” which does not specify what result is being compared. Organise the body by age-group trends and use precise links such as “By contrast” or “From 25–34 onwards” to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “approximately,” “trend,” and “age group,” so the chart’s general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the description awkward. For example, “regular activities doing” does not naturally express participation in physical activity, and “the trend have changed” is not an appropriate way to describe the shift between groups. There are also spelling errors in “younster,” and “fifty two point eight percent” is less suitable for concise chart reporting than a numerical figure. Build a more precise set of comparison verbs and phrases, such as “stood at,” “exceeded,” and “declined,” and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “Looking into the detail” and a contrast introduced with “But.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and agreement occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “the percentage … is represented … respectively,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “the trend have changed,” which has incorrect agreement. The phrase “the age group of 25 to 34 years which is higher for the women” is also an incomplete or poorly connected clause. Articles and prepositions are sometimes awkward, as in “by the both men and women.” Practise forming clear comparison sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, for example, “Women’s participation was higher than men’s in the 25–34 group.”
