Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women in various age groups who did daily physical activity in 2010.

Overall, it is clearly observed that the greatest percentage is shown by the females, while the least percentage is recorded by the males of the Australia.

Looking to the bar chart more closely, the largest percentage is accounted for 53.3% from the females of 45 to 54 age group which do physical activites daily, compared with 43.1% from the males of the same age group.

The lowest percentage is recorded by the males with 39.5% from 35 to 44 age group , while in comparison females remained on the top with 52.5% in same age group. Overall, the bar chart showed that the females are in majority who perform physical activites regular

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify relevant extremes: the highest figure is correctly given as 53.3% for women aged 45–54, and the lowest as 39.5% for men aged 35–44. However, the overview that women have the greatest percentage and men the least is too broad: men lead in the 15–24 group, while women lead in the other five groups, and the overall pattern is not fully summarised. The response also gives only a few comparisons and omits the main age trends, such as men’s fall followed by a gradual rise and women’s peak in middle age. The response is 126 words, below the 150-word minimum, which limits the detail available. Develop a fuller overview and compare more age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to examples, and phrases such as “while in comparison” signal contrast. However, the progression is limited because the two detail paragraphs largely repeat the same focus on the highest and lowest figures rather than organising comparisons across the age groups. “Overall” is also used again at the end, where it repeats the earlier generalisation instead of adding a concluding insight. Some linking is awkward, and the final sentence is incomplete, which weakens the ending. Group the data into a clear comparison of men’s and women’s patterns, and use linking expressions to show how those patterns change with age.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age groups,” “largest,” and “lowest,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some repetition of “percentage” and “recorded,” however, and several word combinations are unnatural, such as “the greatest percentage is shown by the females” and “females remained on the top.” “Daily physical activity” also changes the chart’s wording, which describes regular activity rather than necessarily daily activity. Spelling errors in “activites” and the awkward phrase “of the Australia” reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for describing proportions and trends, and check collocations and spelling before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer comparative sentences, for example, “The lowest percentage is recorded by the males … while in comparison females remained on the top.” These attempts show some range, but control is uneven. The opening overview has an awkward construction in “the least percentage is recorded by the males of the Australia,” and the final sentence lacks a complete grammatical ending: “who perform physical activites regular.” There are also problems with articles and sentence phrasing, as in “in same age group,” and spacing before punctuation is inconsistent. Use complete, carefully checked sentences and practise accurate comparative structures, such as “women’s figure was higher than men’s in this age group.”
