Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and make an attempt to compare age groups, but the main features are not reported accurately enough. Several figures are reversed: for ages 25–34, women were at 48.9% and men at 42.2%, whereas you assign these values to the opposite sexes; the same reversal occurs for ages 35–44 and 45–54. You also state that men below 65 were at 50%, which is not supported by the chart. The overview is unclear and includes a misleading claim that women under 24 were above 50%; their figure was 47.7%. To improve, give a clear overview of the broad pattern—men were highest among the youngest group, while women were higher in most other groups—and check each sex and age label against the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a sequence of age-group comparisons. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, progression is limited because the comparisons are presented as a list, and the overview does not clearly prepare the reader for the details. Linking phrases such as “On the hand,” “While,” and “However” are used inaccurately or mechanically, and some sentences are fragments, including “While, age group 34 to 44…” Group the data more logically—for example, describe the younger groups first and then the older groups—and use accurate links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile.” Clearer paragraphing and references would make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to identify the topic and make simple comparisons, including “percentages,” “age group,” and “approximately.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or unnatural, such as “did exercise,” “do physical activity,” and “age less than 24.” These expressions make the report less precise and sometimes obscure whether you mean the male or female figure. There are also awkward choices such as “different group members” and “can do exercise,” which do not suit a chart description. Build a small set of accurate reporting phrases—such as “the proportion who exercised,” “stood at,” and “was higher than”—and use them consistently to describe the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentence forms, including the overview and comparisons introduced with “whereas” and “however,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and punctuation occur throughout: “Overall, the” lacks a space, “On the hand” is incomplete, and “While, age group…” is not a complete sentence. There are also problems with articles and phrasing, as in “the age group of 55 to 64,” and with verb forms, such as “females can do exercise.” These issues sometimes make relationships between the figures difficult to interpret. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense reporting forms such as “women exercised” or “the figure was.”
