Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the number of Australians men and women in various age groups who practiced regulary physical activity in 2010.

Overall, the data shows in all age groups except the younger one women practiced regulary physical activity more than men in 2010 and the percentage was flactuating between the age groups.

In the youngest age group from 15 year to 24year men recorded a higher percentage than women in practicing physical activities regulary, where men stood at 52,8% ,meanwhile women recorded 47,7%.

From the age group 25 to 34 till the group 45 to 55 year the percentage of women who practiced physical activities regulary saw a substantial rise higher then men throughout all of the 3 age groups, it climbed from 48,9% in the first age group for and 42,2% for men to around 52,5% for females from 35 to 44% while it declined for men to 39,5 % which was the lowest amount recorded throughout the period, to 53,3% for women in the last age group and it was the peak. Moreover, for the age group 55 to 64 where men recorded 45,1% and women accounted for 53% and breaking the countious growth for women, it experienced a dramatic decline for women in the age group 65 to over where only 47,1% surpassing men by less then 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast accurately: men lead only in the youngest group, while women have higher figures in the other five groups. The overview also notes fluctuation, and the response includes several relevant values, including the male low of 39.5% and the female peak of 53.3%. This gives the report a clear factual basis. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: “from 25 to 34 till ... 45 to 55” misstates the final age band, which is 45–54, and the long comparison sentence makes the sequence of figures difficult to follow. The overview could also state the contrasting overall trends more precisely: men fall then recover, while women rise to 45–54 before declining. These features are partly developed, but not consistently clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a body that moves through the age groups. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between points. However, the final body paragraph is one very long sentence containing several age groups, figures and comparisons, so the progression becomes difficult to track. The phrase “from the age group 25 to 34 till the group 45 to 55” also makes the range being discussed unclear. Consider separating the data into two shorter paragraphs or sentences, grouping the younger groups and older groups, and using clear references such as “in the 35–44 group.” This would make the organisation easier to follow and reduce the mechanical feel of some transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “recorded,” “decline,” “peak” and “substantial rise,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. There is some attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “higher.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “regulary,” “flactuating,” “countious” and “surpassing” where the intended comparison is that women’s figure exceeded men’s. Some collocations are also awkward: “the number of Australians” should be “the percentage of Australians,” and “the lowest amount recorded” is less suitable for a percentage than “the lowest figure.” More accurate chart-specific vocabulary and careful proofreading would make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including a comparison introduced by “where” and a longer sentence using “while” and “Moreover.” However, the complex sentences are often difficult to control, particularly the sentence beginning “From the age group 25 to 34 till...” where several clauses and comparisons run together. There are also errors in grammatical forms and sentence construction, such as “Australians men and women,” “from 15 year to 24year,” and “women practiced ... more than men” without consistently clear tense and phrasing. Punctuation around figures is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and percentages. Aim for shorter sentences with one main comparison each, and check agreement, plural forms and punctuation.
