IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of regular physical activity done by both Australian men and women of different age groups in 2010.
Overall, it can be observed that the men from the age group 15 to 24 did the highest physical activity, while women between the of 55 and 64 recorded the highest percentage of physical activity. Moreover, on average women did higher amount of physical activity than Australian men with the sole exception of the age group 15 to 24.
The men between the age of 15 and 24 performed the highest amount of physical activity with 52.8% of men doing it regularly, followed by the age group of 65 and above at 46.7% followed by the age groups 55 to 64, 45 to 54, 35 to 44 and 25 to 34 which recorded 45.1%, 43.1%, 39.5% and 42.2% respectively.
Now looking at the women, it can be seen that women on average performed more physical activity regularly than men with only the women between the age of 15 and 24 doing less activity than men of the same age group. Highest percentage of women who did physical activity lies between the ages 45 and 54 at 53.3% which is followed with age groups 35 to 44 and 55 to 64 with 52.5% and 53% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a clear overview: men aged 15–24 have the highest male figure, and women exceed men in every other age group. Most reported male figures are accurate, and you select relevant comparisons. However, the overview misidentifies the women’s peak: it is 45–54 at 53.3%, not 55–64; the latter is 53.0%. The women’s account also omits the 25–34 and 65-and-over figures, and the male figures are presented in a confusing order, making the comparison less clear. This covers the main task, but some information is more fully reported than other parts. Check the chart carefully and organise the figures to make the key patterns and comparisons precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-part structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of men and women. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Now looking at the women” help signal the stages of the report, and the reader can follow the general progression. Some cohesion is less effective within the detail paragraphs: the male figures are listed in an order that does not match the sequence of age groups, and repeated references to “physical activity” make the account feel less fluid. The final paragraph also repeats the overview comparison before giving the women’s figures. Grouping age bands in chart order and using concise comparisons between the sexes would make the progression more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “recorded,” and “performed,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary phrasing, such as “did the highest physical activity” and “performed more physical activity regularly.” However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing a chart: people do not usually “do the highest physical activity,” and “highest percentage … lies between the ages” is an awkward way to identify a peak. Repetition of “physical activity” and “age group” also limits flexibility. Choose precise reporting collocations, such as “the highest participation rate” or “the figure peaked at,” and vary references to the data where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “with the sole exception of the age group 15 to 24” and the relative clause “which recorded…” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “women between the of 55 and 64” is missing a noun after “the,” while “women on average performed more physical activity regularly than men” has an awkward placement of “on average.” In “Highest percentage of women … lies,” the article is missing and the verb form does not fit the past-time chart description. Review articles, sentence patterns for age ranges, and consistent past-tense reporting to improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
