Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart depicts the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups whol did the daily physical activity in 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that in the age group of 15 to 24, men were superior than women. Furthermore, in the rest of groups the percentage of men was quite lowest to the percentage of women.

In the age group (15 to 24), 52.8% men did regular physical activity as compared to 47.7 for the women. Age group (25 to 34) accounted for 42.2% for men and 48.9 for women. Age group (65 and over) represented 46.7% for men and 47.1 for women.

Age group(35 to 44), the percentage of women was marginaly higher than that for the men, 52.5% and 39.5% respectively. In the age group (45 to 54)

the percentage was also almost 20% higher than that for the men, 53.3% of women and 43.1% of men. Age group (55 to 64) also represented the highest percentage of women as comapred to the percentage fo men. In this age group men and women accounted for 45.1% and 53% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main gender pattern: men lead only among 15–24-year-olds, while women have higher figures in the other groups. Most reported values match the chart, including the figures for ages 35–44 and 55–64. However, the overview is imprecise: “quite lowest” does not clearly describe the comparison, and it misses the broader trend that women’s activity rises to a middle-age peak before falling, while men’s rate drops and then recovers. The claim that women were “almost 20% higher” at ages 45–54 is inaccurate; the difference is 10.2 percentage points. The response reports the data but does not consistently select and summarise the most important features clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs of figures. Grouping the age ranges into paragraphs gives the reader some organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the first detail paragraph jumps from 15–24 to 25–34 and then to 65 and over, before the next paragraph returns to the middle age groups. This makes the comparisons harder to follow. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “as compared to” are used, but connections between the data are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “Age group (35 to 44), the percentage…” lacks a clear grammatical link to the preceding sentence. Present the age groups in order and use explicit comparisons to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “accounted for,” “respectively” and “regular physical activity,” so the topic is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “depicts” and “represented.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “men were superior than women” is not an appropriate way to compare rates, and “quite lowest” does not convey a clear meaning. Spelling errors such as “marginaly,” “comapred” and “fo” are noticeable, while “daily physical activity” changes the chart’s wording and may imply a different frequency. Aim for precise comparison language and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer comparisons, and several sentences communicate the figures clearly, for example, “52.8% men did regular physical activity as compared to 47.7 for the women.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent. The overview phrase “in the rest of groups the percentage of men was quite lowest to the percentage of women” has faulty comparative structure. Some sentences are fragments or lack a clear subject, including “Age group (35 to 44), the percentage of women…” and “Age group (55 to 64) also represented…”. Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing or awkward, as in “52.8% men” and “higher than that for the men.” Use complete clauses and practise accurate comparative forms such as “higher than” and “lower than.”
