IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the proportions of people of Australia of six different age groups who were doing daily exercise in 2010.
Overall, the women performed greater daily physical activity than the men in every age group except one(15-24). Among groups, the most active group for male was 15 to 24, whereas for female was 45 to 54.
Starting with the male, the only age group that was over 50% was 15 to 24, followed by 65 and over with 47.1%. By comparison, 55 to 64 stood at 45.1% and 45 to 54 were at 43.1%. A similar pattern was observed in age groups 35 to 44 and 24 to 34, 39.5 % and 42.2% respectively.
Turning to the female, they showed a contrasting trend with three groups; 35 to 44, 45 to 54, and 55 to 64 over 50% comparing to the male. Meanwhile, 25 to 34 shown 48.9% of females doing daily exercise. The remaining two groups were ranked at fifth and sixth with 47.7% and 47.1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main overall contrast accurately: women recorded higher participation in all age groups except 15–24, and you note the male and female peak groups. Most figures are reported correctly, including the male low of 39.5% and the female high of 53.3%. The response therefore covers the chart’s key features and supports them with relevant data. One factual slip is that you give 47.1% for men aged 65 and over; this is the female figure, while the male value is 46.7%. Also, describing the female groups as “ranked at fifth and sixth” is unclear and does not add a useful comparison. More precise reporting of the remaining values and clearer comparisons would strengthen an already clear summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, male figures, and female figures. The progression from the general pattern to each sex’s data is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Overall,” “By comparison,” and “Turning to the female” help guide the reader. This is a logical organisation with relevant paragraphing. Some linking is less effective: “A similar pattern was observed” is not quite accurate because the male figures first fall and then rise, and “The remaining two groups were ranked at fifth and sixth” makes the comparison difficult to interpret. Use transitions that state the relationship directly, such as “The figures then rose gradually” or “The two youngest groups had lower rates than the female peak.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “proportions,” “contrasting trend,” “stood at,” and “respectively.” These choices make the response appropriately formal and allow you to describe comparisons and figures. There is some flexibility, but several expressions are imprecise or awkward: “people of Australia” is less natural than “Australians,” “daily exercise” does not match the chart’s wording of regular physical activity, and “the most active group for male” is not idiomatic. “Shown” is also used where the past-tense form “showed” is needed. To move towards more precise and flexible vocabulary, use standard collocations for describing participation and peaks, and avoid repeating “group” where a clearer alternative is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple statements and more complex comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. For example, the overview uses a contrast clause, while “A similar pattern was observed…” shows an attempt at a passive construction. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “the most active group for male was,” the noun phrase needs a plural or possessive form, and “25 to 34 shown 48.9%” has an incorrect verb form. There are also agreement and punctuation problems in “three groups … over 50% comparing to the male” and “the female, they.” The sentence listing the male age groups is also awkwardly joined. Check subject–verb agreement, verb tense, and sentence boundaries, and leave a space after commas. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
