IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportions of Australian males and females in six age groups who engaged in regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, women are more physically active than men in all age groups except the youngest group. The biggest difference was among people 35-44, while the figures were almost equal in the oldest group.

To begin with, mens aged 15 to 24 showed largest interest in physical activity, accounted for 52.8%, followed by the percentage declined to 42.2% and 39.5% for the age group 25 to 34 and 35 to 44 respectively. Subsequently, it recovered from 43.1% to 45.1%, reaching almost 46.7% between age 45-64 and over.

Furthermore, girls aged 35 to 44, 45 to 54, and 55 to 64, represented the highest percentage, at 52.5%,53.3% and 53%. After this, younger womens (15 to 24) and elder womens (65 and over) involved compartively less to physical activity, representing 47.7% and 47.1 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a clear overview of its main pattern: women recorded higher participation in every group except ages 15–24, and the oldest group had similar figures. It also reports several accurate values, including 52.8% for young men and the female peak of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds. This meets the task well, with some features developed more fully than others. However, the comparison that the biggest difference was among 35–44-year-olds is inaccurate: the largest gap is in the 25–34 group (48.9% versus 42.2%). The male figures are described in detail, but the female account omits the 25–34 figure and does not clearly compare the two series across the age groups. More precise comparisons would strengthen the overview and reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of male and female participation. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “Subsequently,” and “Furthermore” help signal the movement between points. However, some linking is mechanical, and the progression within the male paragraph is not fully clear. In “followed by the percentage declined,” the relationship between the figures and the sentence structure is difficult to follow; the later phrase “reaching almost 46.7% between age 45-64 and over” also compresses two age groups into an unclear reference. The female paragraph lists selected figures but does not connect them explicitly to the overall comparison. Use clearer transitions and refer to each age band precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “proportions,” “engaged in regular physical activity,” “recovered,” and “represented.” These choices show an attempt to vary wording rather than repeat the task statement. Some less suitable choices and collocations, however, reduce precision: “showed largest interest” suggests motivation rather than participation, while “involved comparatively less to physical activity” is unnatural and obscures the intended meaning. “Girls” and “womens” are also imprecise for adult female age groups, and “mens” needs the plural possessive form if retained. Spelling errors such as “compartively” further affect accuracy. Prefer neutral chart language such as “participation rate” and “the proportion of women who exercised.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence with an exception and a sentence beginning “After this.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors make individual statements awkward or unclear. For example, “followed by the percentage declined” combines structures incorrectly; it could be revised to “the figure then declined to 42.2% and 39.5%.” In “reaching almost 46.7% between age 45-64 and over,” the age-range construction is incomplete, and “47.1 respectively” needs a final percentage sign or a grammatically complete phrase. There are also errors in plural and possessive forms, such as “mens” and “womens.” Aim for complete clauses and check agreement, articles, and age-group phrasing.
