Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph compares the proportion of Australian men and women from different age categories who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, among male individuals who were aged 11-24 did most of the regular physical activity and among female individuals those who were aged 45–54 had did more regular physical activity. In addition, females generally did more physical activity than males, except in older age groups.
Looking first at younger people males aged 15-24 did more physical activity approx 52.8%, compared with females with same age groups they only did 47.7% of regular activity. Among the 25-34 age group females did 48.9% of exercise while male proportion saw a slight decrease upto 42.2%. For people aged 35-44 females were still leading upto 52.5% with major difference in the males ratio 39.5%.
In the older age groups, 45-54 females were leading at 53.3% whereas male were 43.1% involved with regular physical activity. Among age group 55-64 female were 53% and male were 45.1% involved. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the chart’s main comparisons and include accurate figures for all six age groups. The overview identifies the female advantage across most groups and the male peak among 15–24-year-olds, while the body supports these points with relevant data. However, the overview contains an important factual error: men aged 11–24 is not a chart category; the youngest group is 15–24. Also, saying women led “except in older age groups” is unclear, since women actually had higher rates in every group except 15–24, including the oldest group, where the figures were nearly equal. To make the summary more complete and precise, state the overall pattern clearly and note that women peaked at 45–54, while men reached their lowest level at 35–44 before rising.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, with the data presented in a sensible progression from younger to older age groups. Phrases such as “Looking first” and “In the older age groups” help signal this progression, and comparisons between the sexes are generally easy to follow. The main limitation is that some linking and reference choices are repetitive, particularly the repeated “Among” openings and repeated use of “whereas.” The overview’s phrase “except in older age groups” also makes the relationship between the groups less clear than the body figures do. Use more varied but precise transitions, and ensure the overview’s summary matches the comparisons that follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a bar chart, including “proportion,” “compared with,” “slight decrease” and “leading.” The meaning is generally clear, and you avoid relying entirely on basic words such as “more” and “less.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “male individuals” and “female individuals” are unnecessarily wordy, “did more physical activity” is less precise than describing a rate, and “males ratio” is not a natural collocation. “Upto” is also incorrectly written as one word. Aim for concise, consistent terms such as “men,” “women,” “participation rate” and “the proportion of men,” and use verbs such as “rose,” “fell” and “peaked” accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and “compared with,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “those who were aged 45–54 had did more” combines incompatible verb forms; “male were 43.1% involved” has an agreement problem; and “compared with females with same age groups they only did” is awkwardly constructed and lacks a clear grammatical connection. The opening overview also shifts between plural groups and singular phrasing. Review past-tense forms and subject–verb agreement, and build comparisons in a consistent pattern, such as “The figure for women was…, compared with… for men.”
