Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the habit of exercise at several age groups both men and women in Australia, in the year 2010. The units are measured in percentages.

Overall, it can be seen that men those age between 15 and 24 recorded the highest figures and 35 to 44 were the lowest, while women those belong to 45 to 54 experinced the maximum and 65 or over were the lowest percentage of physical exercise.

Looking at the bar graph in more detail, it is evident that more than 52% men at age range 15 to 24 were doing physical exercise and this number fell to round off 42% at age group between 25 and 34, then agin gradully decreased to less than 40% at age group 35 to 44. Finally, physicall exercise for men showed a upward trend to the rest of the all age groups and figures were round of 47% at the people who are 65 and over.

Turning to the remaining data set, we can observe that percentage of women who was doing physical exercise increased gradually between 15 and 54, where age groups 45 to 54 accounted for more than 53%, followed by a little fell at age group 55 to 64 and the figures were 53%. Finall the percentages fell sharply to above 47% at the women who are 65 or over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main contrasts and report the broad patterns accurately: men peak among 15–24-year-olds and reach their low among 35–44-year-olds, while women peak at 45–54 and are lowest among those aged 65 and over. The overview is clear, and the body includes useful figures such as 52.8% for young men and 53.3% for women aged 45–54. The account also correctly describes the rise in women’s activity through age 54 and the later decline. To make the report more precise, include the key comparison that women exceed men in every age group except 15–24, and avoid calling the final female decline “sharp,” since it is a moderate fall from 53% to 47.1%. Overall, the main features are selected and supported, with some scope for sharper comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This gives the information a logical progression, and signposts such as “Overall,” “Looking at the bar graph in more detail,” and “Turning to the remaining data set” help readers follow the shift between sections. The age groups are generally presented in sequence, so the trends are easy to trace. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and phrases such as “Finally” and “then” do not always make the relationship between details especially smooth. The overview could also connect the male and female patterns more directly. Use concise comparisons between the series, rather than relying mainly on separate descriptions, to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “recorded the highest figures,” “increased gradually,” “upward trend,” and “accounted for.” These choices help describe the chart’s patterns, and the meaning remains clear. However, some expressions are imprecise or awkward for formal data reporting: “the habit of exercise,” “the rest of the all age groups,” and “at the women who are 65 or over.” There are also spelling errors, including “experinced,” “agin,” “gradully,” “physicall,” and “Finall,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, natural collocations such as “participated in regular physical activity” and “among women aged 65 and over.” More precise vocabulary for the size of changes would also strengthen the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “where,” and “who,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “men those age between 15 and 24” lacks a well-formed relative phrase, while “women who was doing” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. In “men at age range 15 to 24 were doing,” the article and preposition pattern is also inaccurate. The sentence beginning “Finally, physicall exercise for men showed a upward trend to the rest…” is difficult to parse because its structure and comparison are not controlled. Practise accurate age-group phrases (“men aged 15–24”) and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
