IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given bar chart graph shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular activity in 2010. Here the x-axis represents the age group from 15 to 65 and over and the y-axis represents the persentage of people from zero to sixty.
In graph, light grey color represents the percentage of male and dark grey color represents the percentage of female. Furthermore, the graph shows male from age 15 to 24 has more percentage which is 52.8% means they participated more in activities and male from age 35 to 44 has lower percentage which is 39.5 means they are not actively participate in activities.
If we talk about female, from age 45 to 54 more females participate in activities with percentage 53.3% and females from 65 and over have lower percentage to participate in activities with percentage 47.1%. If we do comparison between male and female both almost equally participate at the age of 15 to 24.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and report several accurate figures, including the male peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the female peak of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds. However, the response is only a minimal summary: it lacks a clear overview of the main pattern, such as women having higher activity rates in every age group except 15–24, and it gives little comparison across the age groups. The claim that the sexes participated “almost equally” at 15–24 is broadly supported, but the difference is about five percentage points. You also describe the female low as 47.1% for those aged 65 and over, although the lowest female figure is 47.7% among 15–24-year-olds. The response is 148 words, below the 150-word minimum. Add a concise overview and more accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, a paragraph about men, and one about women. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “If we talk about female” signal a shift in focus. However, the information does not progress into a clear overall comparison, and the final sentence introduces a comparison without developing it. The repeated framing (“from age…”) makes the report feel like separate observations rather than a connected summary. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly “If we talk about female.” Grouping the main trends together—for example, comparing the sexes across the age range before noting their peaks and lows—would create clearer progression and more effective cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the chart’s topic, including “percentage,” “age group,” “comparison,” and “participate.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. “The given bar chart graph” is redundant, while “more percentage” and “lower percentage to participate” are not natural ways to describe data. “Regular activity” is also less precise than the chart’s “regular physical activity.” There is a spelling error in “persentage,” and “male” and “female” are sometimes used where “men” and “women” would sound more natural for people. Use a wider set of accurate reporting phrases, such as “the proportion who exercised regularly,” “recorded the highest rate,” and “was lower than.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences communicate a basic meaning, and you attempt some longer structures, including “Furthermore, the graph shows…” and “If we do comparison…”. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in these more complex sentences. For example, “male from age 15 to 24 has more percentage” has an incomplete noun phrase and an awkward verb construction; “they are not actively participate” combines incompatible verb forms; and “females from 65 and over have lower percentage” has problems with the age-group construction and article use. The opening also uses “represents” repeatedly in a simple pattern. Practise accurate comparative sentences, such as “The rate for men aged 15–24 was higher than that for women,” and check articles, verb forms, and sentence structure before submitting.
