Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The chart under reference shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. the chart is divided in different age groups and in two main lines i.e male and female. The group which did highest physical activity are age between 45 to 54 and 55 to 64. in female group the least one is the group 65 and over and in male the group which did least physical activity is the group of age ranging between 35 to 44. it is very interesting to see that female group dominated all the way to male group in all ranges. the female did the more physical activity than the male group. so there's no doubt in saying that female do more physical activity in their life than the male.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and correctly note that women recorded higher activity rates than men in most age groups, as well as the male low point at ages 35–44 and the female low point among those aged 65 and over. However, the overview is inaccurate: women did not lead in every age group, since men were higher among 15–24-year-olds (52.8% versus 47.7%). The claim that the highest activity was among people aged 45–54 and 55–64 also overlooks the male peak at 15–24 and the female peak at 45–54. There are no figures to support the comparisons. The response is 118 words, below the 150-word minimum, and therefore leaves the task only minimally addressed. Include accurate key figures and a balanced overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, identifies some high and low groups, and ends with a general comparison. This gives the reader a simple line of development. However, it is presented as one paragraph, and the ideas are not organised into a clear overview followed by supporting comparisons. The repeated claims that women were more active (“female group dominated” and “female did the more physical activity”) add little progression, while “so” does not create a strong concluding link. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and group comparisons logically—for example, first noting the male exception, then describing the age patterns. Clearer referencing would also help the reader follow which age group each claim concerns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “percentage,” “age groups,” and “physical activity.” Some wording also shows an attempt to describe comparisons, such as “dominated.” However, vocabulary is repetitive and several expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “chart under reference,” “two main lines” (the visual uses bars), and “the least one is the group” make the description less clear. “Female group” and “male group” are repeated instead of using more natural forms such as “women” and “men.” Aim for precise chart language and accurate collocations, such as “the proportion of women,” “recorded a higher rate,” and “the lowest figure.” This would make the account clearer without requiring overly advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to link ideas, such as “it is very interesting to see that…” and “so there’s no doubt…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but frequent errors and limited structural variety restrict accuracy. For example, “the group which did highest physical activity are age between…” has problems with agreement and sentence construction; “the female did the more physical activity” uses an incorrect comparative form; and “female do more physical activity” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening also begins a new sentence with lowercase “the,” and several clauses are joined with full stops or informal linking. Practise accurate comparative structures and complete sentences, such as “Women were more active than men in five of the six age groups.”
