Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make several relevant comparisons, including the male lead among 15–24-year-olds and women’s higher figures in most other groups. However, the response only partially reports the main features: it gives few precise figures and does not clearly describe the overall pattern, such as men’s rate falling to a low of 39.5% at ages 35–44 before rising, while women’s rate peaks at 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds. The claim that the sexes had “equal percentage” at 65 and over is inaccurate: the figures are 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women. The conclusion that women were the majority overall is also too broad for age-group data. A clearer overview and accurate key figures would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a basic sequence through the age groups, and phrases such as “Meanwhile” and “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect comparisons. The opening, body and concluding statement are also distinguishable. However, progression is not consistently clear: several age groups are combined without explaining how their figures relate, and the final conclusion repeats a general comparison rather than synthesising the chart’s trends. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, as in “But men group wasn't same as women,” while “When talk about” does not form a clear transition. Organise the body into a clearer comparison of the younger groups and older groups, and use links that express the precise relationship between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “approximately,” and “illustrates,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons you intend. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. For example, “considerable grew” is not a natural way to describe a rate, “majority percentage” and “minority percentage” are unsuitable for comparing chart values, and “was figure out equal percentage” is difficult to interpret. Prefer precise terms such as “rate,” “higher,” “lower,” “rose,” and “peaked.” Avoid repeating “percentage” when a more specific noun or verb can express the trend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few longer structures, including “When talk about the 15 to 24 age group…” and “Looking at the 35 to 44 group…,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and complex attempts are often faulty. Examples include “When talk about,” which lacks a correctly formed introductory clause, and “It had around 5% different,” where the sentence structure and comparison are inaccurate. There are also errors in articles, agreement and sentence construction, as in “male group percentage was higher” and “majority of Australian people were female did regular physical activity.” These errors sometimes make the intended relationship harder to follow. Practise complete comparative sentences, for example, “The male rate was about five percentage points higher than the female rate.”
