Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentages of men and women of different age groups residing in Australia, who performed regular physical exercise in the year 2010.
Overall, the proportion of men who did physical activity is lower than the proportion of women in all age groups, except in young age group.
In the 15-24 age group, the proportion of men is higher, reaching 52.8%, than women who comprised 47.7%. However, much higher difference has been observed in the next two age groups in which the proportion of men engaged in physical activity remained lower from 42.2% to 39.5%, whereas, the proportion of women improved from 48.8% to 52.5% respectively.
In the next two age groups, women proportion remained alomost the same, however, slight increase has been seen in men proportion from 43.1% to 45.1%. In the last age group, the proportion of men and women almost matched each other with the difference of just 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast accurately: men have the higher figure only among 15–24-year-olds, while women lead in the older groups, and you report several relevant percentages. The overview is useful, but “in all age groups, except in young age group” is too broad: the gap is smallest among those aged 65 and over, and the figures are nearly equal rather than identical. There is also a data error: women aged 25–34 are at 48.9%, not 48.8%. Your account of the 45–54 and 55–64 groups notes that women’s figures were almost unchanged and men’s rose, but does not give the women’s values or clearly compare the size of the gap. Include the overall peak and low points to make the key features more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs moving through the age groups in order. This makes the comparisons generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In the last age group” help signal progression, although some transitions are mechanical and the repeated “In the next…” phrasing could be varied. The sentence beginning “However, much higher difference…” combines several comparisons, and “respectively” makes the relationship between the two pairs of figures less clear. Separate the age-group comparisons or use explicit references such as “in the 25–34 group” and “among 35–44-year-olds.” This would make the progression and links between figures more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “remained,” “slight increase,” and “difference,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices and spelling slips. “Women proportion” is not a natural possessive construction; use “the proportion of women.” “Performed regular physical exercise” is understandable, though “engaged in regular physical activity” more closely matches the chart. “Much higher difference” is an awkward collocation, and “comprised 47.7%” is not the most natural way to describe a group’s rate. Check spelling in “alomost,” and use precise language for the near-equal final figures rather than saying they “almost matched.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in the introduction and a contrast clause beginning “whereas.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. In “who performed regular physical exercise,” the comma before “who” is unnecessary; “higher, reaching” also needs a space after the comma. The phrase “the proportion of men engaged in physical activity remained lower from 42.2% to 39.5%” has an unclear comparison structure; write that the male rate fell from one figure to the other. In “women proportion remained,” the possessive pattern is incorrect, and “matched each other with the difference” needs a clearer grammatical construction. More consistently controlled comparisons and punctuation would strengthen the response.
