Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given bar graph provides the information about Australian mass doing regular phsical activity in the year 2010.

Overall, it is apparent that in Australia, regular physical activity was more favoured by women of age group 45 to 54 whereas least by female of age collection 15 to 24. Men of age group 15 to 24 preferred the highest physcial activity in their daily routine while male of age group 35 to 44 preferred the lowest regular physical activity.

It is crystal clear that in 2010, male of age group 15 to 24 did maximum physical activity in routine and female did moderate ( 52.8% and 47.7% ). It declined to 42.2% when physical activity is done by men of age group 25 to 34, it rose to 48.9% by women of age group 25 to 34.The ratio of physical activity done by men and women of age group 35 to 44 was 39.5 and 52.5 repectively.

Female of age group 45 to 54 and 55 to 64 did maximum physical work the proportion was 53.3 and 53 whilst for male it was 43.1 and 45.1. Male and female of age group 65 and over did almost same percentage of physical activity in routine, 46.7 and 47.1.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important features and include accurate figures, such as men’s peak participation among 15–24-year-olds (52.8%) and women’s highest rate among 45–54-year-olds (53.3%). The overview also correctly notes that men’s lowest figure is for ages 35–44 and that the oldest group has similar rates for both sexes. However, the overview says women’s lowest rate is among 15–24-year-olds, whereas it is actually among those aged 65 and over (47.1%; the 15–24 figure is 47.7%). Some comparisons are also unclear: “did moderate” does not explain how the sexes compare, and the account does not clearly summarise the broader pattern of women exceeding men in every group except the youngest. Select and explain the main trends more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting figures. The age groups are generally discussed in sequence, which helps the reader follow the data. However, progression within the body is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “It declined” and “it rose” constructions, and the shifts between male and female figures are not always clearly signposted. For example, “It declined to 42.2% … it rose to 48.9%” leaves the subject of each change implicit. The final paragraph groups two age bands together but does not consistently compare them in a clear pattern. Use explicit comparison phrases and organise the body around the contrasting trends for men and women.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” and “age group,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing chart data: “Australian mass,” “age collection,” “preferred the highest physical activity,” and “physical work” do not accurately express participation rates. There are also spelling errors, including “phsical,” “physcial,” and “repectively,” which reduce accuracy. Repeated use of “maximum” and “routine” limits the range of suitable reporting language. Build a more precise set of chart-description terms, such as “participation rate,” “recorded,” “was highest,” and “was lowest,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and most of the figures remain understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, make relationships less clear. For example, “Female of age group 45 to 54 and 55 to 64 did maximum physical work” has problems with article use, number agreement, and sentence construction; “when physical activity is done by men” also shifts awkwardly into the present tense within a past-year report. Several sentences omit articles or use incomplete comparison patterns, as in “the proportion was 53.3 and 53.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and the sentence joining the 25–34 figures needs clearer separation. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete comparative sentence patterns while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
