Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You include figures for all six age groups and both sexes, and most of these match the chart. You also identify useful comparisons, such as men having the higher rate among 15–24-year-olds and women recording higher rates in most other groups. However, the response is largely a sequence of figures rather than a clear summary of the main features. It lacks a distinct overview of the overall pattern—for example, that men’s rate falls to a low among 35–44-year-olds before rising, while women’s rate peaks in middle age. The final comparison is also unclear: women’s rate does not simply drop slightly across ages 54 to 65 and over. Select the key trends and state them accurately before giving supporting figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows the age groups in chart order, which gives the information some basic organisation, and phrases such as “whereas” attempt to compare the sexes. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long sentence, so the reader has difficulty distinguishing the introduction, overview and supporting details. The final sentence shifts to broad comparisons without clearly connecting them to the figures, and “whereas” is used in a way that makes the relationships hard to follow. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the detailed comparisons, and group the age bands by pattern—for instance, the male and female rates in the younger groups versus the middle and older groups. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise linking would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “compared to” and “dropped,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “the group percentage,” “male working” and “females … were working more,” which do not clearly describe participation in physical activity. Spelling errors such as “anaylizes,” “fermales” and “comnpared” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise reporting verbs and trend language, such as “the proportion who exercised,” “was higher than,” “fell to a low” and “rose gradually.” Check spelling and avoid repeating “by age group” in every comparison.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine comparisons and figures in longer sentences, but the response relies on a limited range of structures, and these extended sentences are often difficult to control. For example, the opening runs several clauses together without clear sentence boundaries, while “52.8 percentage of male and 47.7 percentage of female did exercise” has problems with articles, plural forms and sentence construction. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including the missing space after “chart,” and the lack of a full stop before the final comparison. Use shorter, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and articles—for example, “52.8% of men exercised, compared with 47.7% of women.”
