Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include a relevant overview, noting that women generally had higher activity rates and that men’s figures fluctuated. You also correctly identify the highest male rate among 15–24-year-olds and the female peak around ages 45–54. However, the overview is weakened by saying women had the largest percentage “over the period,” which is not true for the youngest group, and by claiming the oldest groups “remained stable” without support. The report ends before completing the comparison of the older female groups, and several figures or age ranges are unclear. The response is also 11 words below the required minimum. Include a complete account of the main trends and key comparisons, using accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an opening and overview are followed by a paragraph with some figures, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because the first paragraph combines several claims without a clear order, while the second moves between age groups and figures abruptly. The final sentence is incomplete, leaving the comparison unfinished. Some references are also unclear, as in “remaing two major group,” and the punctuation around “mens.65” disrupts the flow. Organise the body by comparing male and female trends across age groups, and use clear sentence boundaries and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “fluctuated,” “percentage,” and “participation rates,” which helps communicate the chart’s subject. There is also an attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “percentage” throughout. However, spelling and word-form errors are frequent and sometimes make the message harder to understand: “participartion,” “woemns,” and “remaing” are examples. Several expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “female age group” and “experience for 48.9%.” Use standard chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe a figure as “stood at” a percentage and refer to “women aged 25–34.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “In contrast” and a sequence using “and then.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “Australian male and female” lacks appropriate plural forms, “who doing” is missing a verb form, and “female age group 45 to 54 experience” has problems with agreement and tense. The sentence beginning “52.5% woemns participate” also lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “65 and over age group male and femal remained stable” is difficult to parse. Practise complete subject–verb structures, consistent past tense for the 2010 data, and accurate plural forms.
