Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart below illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. In the chart we can see most of the female candidates of age ranging from 25 to over were engaged in physical activities as compared to male candidates. We can also see the involvement of male candidates of age 15 to 24 slightly more than female candidates of the same age group. The range of involvement of Men in physical activities is slightly constant till the age group rraches 55 to 64. The chart shows that the involvement of men in physical activities rose as the age increases. The chart also ilustrates the involvement of female has increased with the increase in age groups. The females of age group of 15 to 24 and 65 and over has nearly same percentage of involvement. We can see the slight decrease at the age of 35 to 44 but rises along the increase in age group reaching 46.7 of age group of 65 and more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad comparison that women were more active than men in most age groups, and you note that men aged 15–24 had the higher figure. However, the report only partially selects and accurately describes the main features. The claim that male activity was “slightly constant” until 55–64 conflicts with the data: it falls from 52.8% to 39.5% before rising. You also say female participation increased with age, although it peaks at 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds and then declines. The final figure of 46.7% belongs to men aged 65 and over, not women. Give a clear overview of the contrasting trends and support it with accurate key figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response moves through several relevant observations, and phrases such as “We can also see” and “The chart also illustrates” signal that you are adding information. However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear overall progression: the opening mixes an overview with a specific age comparison, and later sentences repeat similar claims about activity increasing with age. There are no distinct paragraphs to separate the main overview from supporting comparisons. Some references are also unclear, particularly “reaching 46.7 of age group of 65 and more,” which makes it difficult to tell which sex the figure describes. Organise the response into an overview followed by grouped comparisons, and use precise references to men and women.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary such as “percentage,” “age group,” “involvement,” and “decrease,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are unnatural or imprecise. “Female candidates” and “male candidates” do not suit a chart about physical activity; “women” and “men” are more appropriate. “Involvement” is repeated where “participation” or “activity levels” would be clearer, and “slightly constant” is not a natural way to describe a trend. There are also spelling errors, including “rraches” and “ilustrates.” Use a wider set of accurate trend verbs and comparison phrases, and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including clauses with “as” and “but,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, the structures are limited and errors recur, especially in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “The females … has nearly same percentage” should use a plural verb and a complete article structure, while “the involvement of female has increased” needs a plural or singular noun phrase with matching agreement. The sentence beginning “We can see the slight decrease…” also has an unclear subject and an incomplete comparison. Practise building accurate sentences around a clear subject, verb, and comparison, and check singular/plural agreement and articles.
