Student answer (Band 5.5)
This chart demonstrates the information about the physical activity of Australian men and women of different age groups based on their physical activity in 2010. The trend shows that the men in their teens and early twenties tend to show most physical activity as compared to the other age groups. While the women in their 40s and 50s tend to show the most physical activity, compared to the other age groups. The men and women age above 65 demonstrate similar level of physical activity. The men in their late 30s and early 40s tend to show minimum physical activity as compared to other age groups. Similarly, the women in their teenage, early 20s and late 60s shows minimum physical activity. The trend shows that 52-53% women from 30s to 50s age group do regular physical acitivity. This trend is not seen in men as they only focuses on physical activity in their early 20s. This trend starts to decline as they age and become stable in their 40s and above, where only 43-46% of men take care of their physial fitness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important patterns accurately: men are most active in the youngest group, women lead across the middle age groups, and the figures for people aged 65 and over are close. You also note the male low point in the 35–44 group and the female peak around ages 35–64. However, some comparisons are imprecise: women’s lowest figure is in the 15–24 group, not across “teenage, early 20s and late 60s,” and men’s activity rises after 35 rather than simply becoming stable. The response also lacks a clear, concise overview separated from supporting details, and some claims are not supported with exact figures. Select the main contrasts and report them more precisely to develop the summary fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving from broad trends to age-specific observations, and phrases such as “Similarly” and “This trend” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is not clearly organised into an introduction, overview and detail paragraphs. Several sentences repeat the same comparison, especially the claims about men’s early peak and women’s middle-age activity. “This trend” is also unclear in the final part because it could refer to more than one pattern. The opening repeats “physical activity” and does not lead efficiently into the key features. Group the overview first, then compare the age groups in a logical order, using clear references and fewer repeated linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “decline,” “similar,” “minimum” and “age group,” so the main message is usually understandable. There is some attempt at more formal phrasing, but several expressions are unnatural or imprecise for chart reporting: “show most physical activity,” “focuses on physical activity,” and “take care of their physical fitness.” Spelling errors such as “acitivity” and “physial” also reduce accuracy. Prefer standard collocations such as “had the highest participation rate,” “were physically active,” and “the proportion declined.” Avoid describing the figures as people’s focus or care; the chart reports percentages doing regular activity, not their motivation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “as,” and most of the intended comparisons can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening uses the awkward construction “demonstrates the information about,” while “The men and women age above 65 demonstrate similar level” has errors in the age phrase, article and number agreement. In “the women … shows” and “they only focuses,” the verb forms do not agree with their subjects. The sentence beginning “While the women…” is a fragment because it is not joined to a main clause. Work on subject–verb agreement, articles and complete sentence structure, and vary sentence openings without leaving dependent clauses unfinished.
