Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women in various age groups who did regular excercise in 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that women take part in more physical activities as compared to men in general.

To start with, 15 to 24 is the only age group where men did more physical activity accounting 52.8% in proportion as compared to 47.7% of women. From there onward an upward trend can be seen were 48.9% women did physical exercise as compared to 42.2 % of men between age group 25 to 34. The proportion of women in physical activities rise significantly among age group 35 to 44 where 52.5% women were doing exercise, while the proportion of men doing physical activity fell to 39.5%.

In next age group, 45 to 64 phyiscally active women were 53.3% in proportion while men were 45.1 % in proportion. However, the age group 65 and over showed a slight growth in proportion of men were 46.7 % of men were doing exercise while the women were 47.1 in percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main comparison—that women were more active overall—and correctly note that men led only in the 15–24 group. Several figures are also reported accurately, including 52.8% for young men and 52.5% for women aged 35–44. This gives the response a relevant overview and useful supporting detail. However, some key information is incomplete or imprecise: the 45–54 and 55–64 groups are combined as “45 to 64,” obscuring the separate figures and the fact that women’s rate peaks at 53.3% in the 45–54 group. The description of the final group as showing a “slight growth” is also unclear because no comparison point is specified. Reporting each age band distinctly and summarising the contrasting trends more precisely would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the age-group data. The sequence broadly follows the chart from youngest to oldest, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “From there onward,” and “However” help guide the reader. This is a coherent arrangement, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. “From there onward an upward trend” does not specify whose trend is rising, and the shift from the 35–44 group to “In next age group, 45 to 64” merges two categories and weakens progression. The final sentence also repeats “proportion” and is difficult to follow. Use clearer references to men’s and women’s rates, and give each age group its own precise place in the sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounting,” “upward trend,” and “slight growth,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe participation, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context. “Women take part in more physical activities” is less precise than saying their participation rate is higher, while “accounting 52.8% in proportion” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “excercise” and “phyiscally” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional reporting language and check spelling carefully; this will make the comparisons sound more natural and precise without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “as compared to” and a relative clause in “the only age group where men did more physical activity.” Most of the data remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “accounting 52.8%” needs a suitable construction such as “accounting for 52.8%,” and “the proportion … rise” has a subject–verb agreement error. The final sentence, “showed a slight growth in proportion of men were 46.7%,” combines clauses without a clear grammatical link. There are also inconsistent tense choices between “take part” and “did.” Use past tense consistently for the 2010 data, and check agreement and sentence boundaries when presenting figures.
