Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph compares the exercise attributes in Australian males and females of different age groups in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and report several accurate male figures, including the high of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the low of 39.5% among men aged 35–44. You also recognise that female participation rises through much of adulthood. However, the overview is inaccurate: women are not more active in every age group, since young men lead in the youngest group. The claim that the sexes show their greatest difference in middle age is also misleading; the largest gap is among 35–44-year-olds, but the overview should state the main pattern more precisely. The female account is unfinished and omits key figures, including the peak of 53.3% and the decline to 47.1% among the oldest women. Select and compare the main features more fully and accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of male and female trends. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning to females” help signal shifts. However, the progression is weakened by an unclear sequence in the male paragraph: “Before rising to 43.1% … it declines … to 39.5%” makes the order of changes difficult to follow. The final sentence stops after “with steadily increases,” leaving the female account incomplete and disrupting the ending. Use a clear chronological sequence for each group, and complete the comparison before concluding. Some linking is also mechanical; connect figures by explaining how they compare rather than relying mainly on “before” and “after.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “declines,” “rises,” and “working years,” so the response can describe basic trends. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “exercise attributes,” “devoted towards physical activity,” and “less amount of young girls in physical activity.” These expressions make parts of the report harder to interpret and are not well suited to formal chart description. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “activites,” “noticable,” “involvment,” and “gardually.” Aim for precise, conventional terms such as “participation rate,” “was physically active,” and “increased steadily.” Check spelling and word forms carefully, and avoid informal or unsupported labels such as “young boys” and “young girls” when the chart reports age groups.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a time clause beginning “before.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make the intended sequence difficult to follow. For example, “Males and females of middle age presents” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “patterns remain same” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “Before rising to 43.1%” is a fragment, and the following punctuation and clause order make the trend unclear. The final phrase, “with staedily increases,” is also grammatically incomplete. Practise writing complete sentences with one clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. A wider range of structures will be more effective when each sentence is controlled.
