Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chart illustrates people of australia in percentage who were physically active by gender across various age group in 2010.

Overall, nearly half of the population was active throughout the year 2012, where men were more active than women in their teenage comparatively but after the age of 24 it's completely opposite.

In terms of men, they were most active in the age between 15 to 24 with 52.8% and then it decreases to 42.2 in their adulthood and till 44 years of their life span it got a deep of 39.5 and after that it increased steadily by 2-4 % till 46.7% from 45-54, 55-64 and 65+ age groups.

In terms of women, they were not much active in their teenage just 47.7%. But after that the percentage increased steadily with a peak of 53.3 when their age is between 45 and 54. After 65 years of life span they were again less active

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report several key figures, including the male high of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds, the male low of 39.5% at 35–44, and the female peak of 53.3% at 45–54. However, the overview contains a major factual error: it refers to 2012, although the chart is for 2010. It also says men were more active in their teenage years, rather than specifically among the 15–24 group, and does not clearly summarise the overall pattern that women exceeded men in every other age group. Some details are incomplete or imprecise, such as the women’s later decline. A more accurate overview and fuller comparisons would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. The signposting phrases “Overall,” “In terms of men,” and “In terms of women” help readers follow the comparison, and the male figures are presented in a broadly logical sequence. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective progression. However, the overview does not accurately frame the data, and the final sentence about women is unfinished, leaving the account without a complete closing point. Some links between figures are also compressed into a long sentence. Complete the final comparison and use clearer sentence boundaries to make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a chart, including “percentage,” “peak,” “increased steadily,” and “active.” These choices generally communicate the intended trends, and the response is not overly repetitive. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “people of australia in percentage,” “it got a deep,” and “not much active.” “Teenage” is also not a precise label for the chart’s 15–24 age group, which includes people beyond their teenage years. Use standard chart language such as “the proportion of Australians,” “fell to a low,” and “were less physically active.” More precise collocations would improve clarity and make the description sound more academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “but” and a time sequence describing changes across age groups. The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “across various age group” needs a plural noun, while “it decreases” shifts tense in a report about 2010 data; “it decreased” would be consistent. The sentence beginning “In terms of men” also has an unclear structure, and “when their age is between 45 and 54” uses an awkward clause pattern. The final sentence lacks a full stop and a completed thought. Aim for shorter, complete sentences and check tense consistency, articles, and plural forms.
