IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women in six different age groups who did regular activity throughout 2010.

Overall, men had the highest rate than women in the age 15 to 24, whereas the proportion of activity for women was high among aged 25 to over 60.

The most striking feature is that the percentage of activity for men aged 15 to 24 stood at 52.8%, after which it decreased gradually 44 from 52.8% to 39.5% aged 15 to 44. After that, it rose steadily from 43.1% to 46.7% aged 45 to over 65.

Looking at the figure in more detail, the proportion of women activity witnessed 47.7%, following which it rose from 47.7% to 53.3% aged 15 to 54, then it declined steadily from 53.3% to 47.1% aged 55 to over 65. The proportion of women activity experienced 53.3%, the highest figure women aged 24 to over 65. The lowest percentage of activity for men age group had seen aged 35 to 44, stood at 39.5%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: men lead in the youngest group, while women have higher participation across the other age groups. You also report several key figures accurately, including the male low of 39.5% and the female peak of 53.3%. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. The overview says women’s activity was high among those “aged 25 to over 60,” which does not clearly capture that women exceeded men in every group from 25–34 onwards. The male decline is described as gradual, although it falls to 39.5% by ages 35–44 and then rises. The claim that 53.3% was the highest figure for women “aged 24 to over 65” is also imprecise. State the main trends and age ranges more clearly, and avoid repeating the peak.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on men, and a paragraph on women. This makes the two series easy to locate, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Looking at the figure in more detail” signal the stages of the report. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear. “After which” and “following which” are repeated, while “after which it decreased gradually 44 from 52.8%” interrupts the progression and makes the relationship between figures difficult to follow. The final sentence is also detached from the preceding discussion and lacks clear punctuation. Improve cohesion by using direct comparisons and simpler links, and group the key trends in a more balanced way rather than adding a repeated peak at the end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “proportion,” “stood at,” “decreased,” “rose steadily,” and “highest figure.” These choices help communicate the data and show an attempt to vary wording. Some collocations and phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “the percentage of activity,” “women activity,” and “had the highest rate than women” do not express the comparisons naturally. “Witnessed” is also an awkward choice for describing a figure, and “throughout 2010” may suggest continuous activity rather than the year represented. Aim for precise, conventional expressions such as “the proportion of women who exercised regularly” and “was higher than.” This would make the report sound more natural while retaining the useful range already attempted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “after which” and “following which,” and the main meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in comparisons and sentence construction. For example, “men had the highest rate than women” needs a comparative form such as “a higher rate than women,” while “women was high among aged 25 to over 60” lacks a clear grammatical subject and structure. In “it decreased gradually 44 from 52.8%,” the number is inserted without a grammatical link, and the final sentence, “The lowest percentage … had seen aged 35 to 44, stood at 39.5%,” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Use complete clauses and check comparative forms, articles, and punctuation.
