IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart demonstrates the percentage of different ages, in males and females of Australia, who had been doing physical activity on daily basis in the year of 2010.
Overall, the females were found more interested in physical activity (53.3% was the highest one )as compared to that of males, in almost all age groups, except one age group of 15-24 years . The two age groups that showed higher similar results were of 45-54 years and 55-64 years ages. The females of 35-44 years age also, showed a slightly lower result of 52.5%.The remaining three age groups illustrated lower percentages and the least percentage was shown by the age group of 25 to 34 years.
On the other hand, the men were found less committed towards exercise than the women. The adults of ages 15-24%, were found highly active towards their physical exercise, probably 52.8%. The least interested males, were from 35 to 44 years of ages. From 45 to 65 years the percentage started increasing. In contrast, from 15 to 44 years, the percentage started decreasing.
In the end, it was observed that males were active in their young ages as compared to females who were found more active in later ages .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast accurately: women recorded higher activity in every age group except 15–24, and you note the male low point at ages 35–44 followed by a rise. The figures of 52.8% for young men and 52.5% for women aged 35–44 are also correct. However, some comparisons are unclear or imprecise. Calling 25–34 the “least percentage” among women is inaccurate: women’s lowest figure is 47.1% among those aged 65 and over. The overview also says the two age groups with “higher similar results” were 45–54 and 55–64, but does not clearly explain that women’s rates were close to 53% in both. Report the key patterns more precisely and avoid unsupported descriptions such as “more interested.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, separate discussion of women and men, and a concluding comparison. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the final sentence restates the contrast already given in the overview, while “In contrast” introduces a trend that is not really contrasting with the preceding sentence. Some references are also unclear, particularly “The two age groups that showed higher similar results,” which does not specify whose results are being compared. Grouping the figures into a clear overview followed by focused comparisons, and using linking phrases only when their relationship is accurate, would make the organisation more effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age groups,” “increasing,” and “decreasing,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “committed towards exercise,” but this is not a natural way to describe chart data. Phrases such as “more interested in physical activity” and “least interested males” imply motivation rather than measured participation, while “higher similar results” is awkward and imprecise. Prefer neutral, accurate reporting language such as “had a higher participation rate” or “recorded the lowest proportion.” More consistent use of precise terms for rates and comparisons would improve control and reduce the impression of strained word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “In contrast, from 15 to 44 years, the percentage started decreasing.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “in males and females of Australia” has an awkward grammatical construction, and “on daily basis” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “The adults of ages 15-24%” also uses the percentage sign incorrectly after an age range, and “From 45 to 65 years the percentage started increasing” needs clearer grammatical framing. There are inconsistent spaces around punctuation and missing spaces after full stops. Check articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries carefully while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
