Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates information about the proportion of Australian men and women in various age groups who participated in the regular physical activity in 2010.
In the first age group starting from 15 to 24, the proportion of men was 52.8% where women were standig on 47.7% and it was the only group where the percentage of men was a bit higher than the women.Furthermore, the age group from 25 to 34, men and women both were 42.2% and 48.9 % respectively. In the third group ranges from 35 to 44, the proportion of males was 39.5% while on the other hand, women were 52.5%.
The age group for 45 to 54 , men were 43.1% and the women were standing 53.3% who participated in the regular physical exercise.
The next group for 55 to 64, the percentage of males was 45.1% while women were higher than male in this group with the proportion of 53%. In the last age group 65 or over, both genders were almost equally interested in doing the regular physical exercise.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the percentage of women in all ages groups were higher than men except the age group 15 to 24.
Moreover, men and women both were almost equal in the age group 65 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You report the figures for all six age groups and identify the main gender pattern: men lead only among 15–24-year-olds, while women have higher participation in the other groups. The overview also notes that the sexes are nearly equal among those aged 65 and over, which is supported by 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women. Most figures are accurate, although the sentence about ages 25–34 is awkwardly phrased and could make the comparison clearer. The response is mainly a sequence of individual figures, so the overall trends are not fully developed—for example, the rise in women’s rates to a peak at 45–54 and the men’s fall followed by a gradual recovery could be highlighted more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the chart, reports the age groups in order, and ends with an overview. This makes the information easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “while,” and “Overall” to connect comparisons. However, the body reads largely as a list of age-group figures, and some transitions feel mechanical or repetitive. The overview comes after the detailed reporting, so the main patterns are not established before the reader encounters the numbers. Grouping the age ranges by trend—for example, the early decline and later recovery among men—would create stronger progression. Punctuation spacing and the long, crowded sentences also occasionally interrupt the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “participated,” and “almost equally.” These choices generally communicate the comparisons, and the topic remains clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “women were standing on 47.7%,” “women were standing 53.3%,” and “interested in doing” physical activity. These sound less precise than standard chart-reporting language. “Regular physical activity” is also repeated frequently, and “both genders” is less natural here than “men and women.” Aim for concise, conventional collocations such as “the figure for women was” and “participation rate,” while checking spelling, including “standing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “while,” “where,” and “who,” and the main comparisons are usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “the age group from 25 to 34, men and women both were…” lacks a clear grammatical frame, while “the percentage of women in all ages groups were higher” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “In the first age group…” also runs several ideas together, with missing spaces after punctuation and a full stop needed before “Furthermore.” Use a consistent pattern such as “Among people aged 25–34, the figures were…” and check agreement and sentence boundaries.
