IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar graph illistrates the percentage of male and female in Australia who take part in daily physical excercise in the year 2010.

Overall, it is clearly seen that, the perticipation of male in regular movement activities is high at the young age and it is decreased with the growing age. Female, on the other hand, perticipant grow interest in physical activity from the middle age to old age. However, when they reached at the age 65 both male and female take similar interest on physical activities.

The high interest in physical activity in male figure was about 52.8% at the age of 15 to 24. The interest is decreased by 10% and 4% when they reach at the age of 25 to 44 respectively. When they cross 45 the interest grow little more to 2% and that show an upoward trend. Finally it reached its peak to 46.7% at the age of 65.

The performence of regular physical activities in female was low at young age from 15 to 24. When they cross the age 25 they concentrate on physical activity more than the male figure. The percentage increased slowly. From 48.9% to 52.5% respectively. There was a little fall noticed in at 45 to 54 the percentage was 53.3% and it falled to 0.3% at the age of 55 to 64. However, at the age pf 65 and avobe both male and female shows the same interest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant figures, including the male high of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the female rise from 48.9% to 52.5%. However, the overview is only partly accurate: male participation does not simply decrease with age, as it rises after reaching 39.5% at ages 35–44. The claim that both sexes show the same interest at 65 and over is also inaccurate (46.7% for men and 47.1% for women). Some changes are misreported: the male rate falls by about 10 percentage points from 15–24 to 25–34, then by about 3 points to 35–44, while the female rate rises to 53.3% before a small decline. Select and compare the main trends more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several comparisons are not connected precisely to the data. For example, “The interest is decreased by 10% and 4% when they reach at the age of 25 to 44 respectively” makes the age points and changes difficult to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “on the other hand,” and “However” are used, but some do not accurately signal the relationship between ideas. Organise each sex’s figures in age order and use clear comparisons to show the turning points and differences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “increased,” “fall,” and “upward trend,” so the chart’s general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. Phrases such as “regular movement activities,” “take similar interest,” and “concentrate on physical activity” are not natural ways to describe participation rates. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “illistrates,” “excercise,” “perticipation,” and “performence,” which reduce the accuracy of the report. Use precise chart language consistently—for example, “the proportion who exercised regularly”—and choose verbs such as “rose,” “declined,” and “remained similar” to describe the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including contrast with “on the other hand” and time clauses such as “when they cross the age 25.” However, errors are frequent and sometimes make comparisons difficult to interpret. Examples include “the participation of male … is high … and it is decreased,” where the subject and verb form are awkward, and “the percentage increased slowly. From 48.9% to 52.5% respectively,” which leaves the second sentence incomplete. Other problems include “when they reached at the age 65,” “it falled,” and “both male and female shows.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting, subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence construction. A few well-controlled complex sentences would make the comparisons clearer.
