IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given bar chart illustrate the proportion of Autralian citizens of various age groups, who did physical activities on daily basis in 2010.
Overall, both the genders show fluctuating percentages across different age groups. The females are more engaged in physical activites than the males as shown in the chart.
In age groups below 50 years, males aged 15 to 24 are 52.8% engaged in activites while females are 47.7%. The age group of 25 to 34 42.2% males and 48.9% females are doing physical activites. While in age group of 35 to 44 39.5% males and 52.5% females are spending time working on their chores.
In age above 50 years, 43% males and 53.3% females are working in age group 45 to 54 years old. In the age group 55 to 64 45.1% males and 53% females are engaged with physical activites. Aged 65 or above, both genders are active in almost equal proportion of 46.7% male and 47.1% female.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You report the figures for all six age groups and identify the broad contrast that women were more active in most groups, while men led among 15–24-year-olds. The near-equal figures for people aged 65 and over are also noted. However, the overview is imprecise: “both the genders show fluctuating percentages” does not highlight the key pattern that male participation fell to a low among 35–44-year-olds before rising, whereas female participation peaked around ages 45–64. The claim that women were more engaged overall also needs qualification because men had the higher rate in the youngest group. Some descriptions are inaccurate or unclear, such as saying participants were doing activities “on daily basis” and describing the 35–44-year-old women as doing chores. Select and explain the main trends more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs grouped by age. This makes the figures reasonably easy to follow, and the age-group sequence is generally logical. However, the division into “below 50 years” and “above 50 years” is not an exact fit for the chart’s age bands, and the transition “While in age group…” creates a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The repeated pattern of listing male and female figures also makes the report somewhat mechanical. Improve progression by grouping the data around meaningful trends—for example, the male decline and recovery, then the female rise and later fall—and use linking phrases to show those comparisons clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary such as “proportion,” “percentages,” “age groups,” and “almost equal proportion,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “engaged,” “activities,” and “age group,” and some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural. “Working on their chores” does not describe the chart, which reports regular physical activity, while “engaged with physical activities” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors, including “Autralian” and repeated misspellings of “activities.” Use precise, neutral terms such as “participated in regular physical activity” and vary reporting verbs carefully. Avoid adding interpretations about chores or daily routines that the chart does not provide.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the numerical comparisons remain understandable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “The age group of 25 to 34 42.2% males and 48.9% females are doing…” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the age group and the figures, while “While in age group of 35 to 44…” is a dependent clause without a main clause. There are also issues with articles and phrasing, as in “on daily basis” and “In age above 50 years.” The opening subject–verb agreement is incorrect: “chart illustrate” should be “chart illustrates.” Build complete comparison sentences and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries to make the information more controlled.
