Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant figures, including the male peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the near-equal rates for those aged 65 and over. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: “all age group fluctuated” does not summarise the main pattern, and women were not higher in every age group, since men led in the youngest group. The account also misreports the 35–44 figures: women were at 52.5% and men at 39.5%, but you give these in the reverse order. The 45–64 comparison is compressed and omits the 45–54 female figure. State the overall gender pattern and contrasting trends clearly, then check that each figure is assigned to the correct group.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs presenting age-group details. The sequence broadly follows the chart from youngest to oldest, and phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the graph,” and “In addition” help signal progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Age group 45 to 64” combines two separate categories, and the sentence beginning “the proportion of joining regular exercise increased” does not make clear whose rate increased or which years are being compared. The overview also does not prepare the reader for the detailed comparisons. Use one paragraph to summarise the main trends, then group the data logically and use precise references to each age band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “decreased,” “increased,” and “stood around.” This allows the reader to understand the general purpose of the response. However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices reduce precision: “maximum time” is not suitable for describing a percentage, “doing regularly exercise” is awkward, and “percentage of joining regular exercise” is an unclear collocation. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “propoetion,” “adition,” and “groupe.” Aim for consistent, natural phrases such as “the proportion who exercised regularly” and “the rate rose/fell,” and proofread spelling so that errors do not distract from the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and clauses joined by “and.” However, control is uneven, and errors in sentence structure and agreement sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “all age group fluctuated doing regular physical activity” has an incorrect plural form and an incomplete construction, while “Age group 25 to 34, male percentage decreased and female proportion increased, it was…” joins clauses incorrectly. In “Those who were 65 and over, their percentage…” the opening phrase is not grammatically integrated with the main clause. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with clear subjects, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when joining clauses.
