Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the ratio of males and females of Australia in different age bracket doing regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, women exercised more as compared to men; however, 15 to 24 year old males performed more physical activity than females. Furthermore, the most significant difference was witnessed in 35 to 44 age group.
In terms of 35 to 44 age bracket, 52.5% females performed exercise as opposed to males who accounted for 39.5%. Similarly, 45 to 54 years old females exercised more than males (53.3% and 43.1%, respectively). A similar trend was recorded in 55-64 and 25 to 34 age group, in which females ratio stood at 53% and 48.9% and male figure was at 45.1% and 42.2%, respectively.
On the other hand, 15 to 24 year old males (52.8) did more physical exertion than females (47.7%). A marginal difference was noticed in 65 and over age bracket, where figures stoold at 47.1% women and 46.7% men.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main comparisons and gives a clear overview: women recorded higher activity in every age group except 15–24, while the largest gap was among 35–44-year-olds. The figures cited for these groups, as well as the other age bands, match the chart, and the report covers all six groups. This clear selection and support make the account effective. To strengthen it further, make the overview more precise: “women exercised more” is a broad summary that needs the stated exception alongside it, and the claim about the “most significant difference” could be supported with the size of that gap. Also, “ratio” in the opening does not accurately describe the percentages shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by comparisons among the age groups, with the youngest group and oldest group contrasted at the end. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the comparisons. This is a coherent structure, though some connections feel mechanical or imprecise. For example, “A similar trend was recorded” groups the 25–34 and 55–64 figures without explaining the comparison, and the order of those groups shifts within the sentence. Use a more consistent age-group sequence and make each reference explicit, such as stating that women exceeded men in both groups. This would make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary to describe the chart, including “accounted for,” “marginal difference,” and “figures stood at.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “ratio” should be “percentage,” “females ratio” is an awkward phrase, and “performed exercise” and “physical exertion” are not natural ways to report regular activity. The response also repeats “exercised more” and “age bracket,” limiting flexibility. Spelling errors in “stoold” and “bracket” (where “age group” would be more suitable) affect the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for precise, natural chart language such as “the proportion of women,” “were physically active,” and “the figure for men.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast with “however” and a relative clause beginning “in which.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and the figures are generally integrated into complete statements. Some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “males and females of Australia in different age bracket doing” has problems with the noun phrase, plural agreement, and clause structure; “Australian men and women in different age groups who did” would be clearer. In “15 to 24 year old males,” the compound age modifier needs hyphens, and “figures stoold at” contains an incorrect verb form. Review articles, plurals, and sentence construction to make the complex comparisons more consistently accurate.
