IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart given illustrates the comparison of regular physical activity between Australian men and women in six age groups in 2010.

Overall, highest regular physical activity is recorded in women in age group 45 to 54 years, where as lowest in men of 35 to 44 years of age. Women showed an overall more regular physical activity especially between 35 to 64 years.

Fifty-three point three percent of Australian women of 45 to 54 years of age did the maximum regular exercise in 2010. This trend was followed by women aged 55 to 64 ( 53%), 35 to 44 years (52.5%), 25 to 34 (48.9%), 15 to 24 years (47.7%), and 65 and over (47.1%).

In contrast, maximum physical activity was seen in Australian men of age 15 to 24 years in 2010 with a proportion of 52.8%. While 46.7 percent of men aged 65 and over performed regular physical activity, followed by age group 55 to 54 years (45.1%), 45 to 54 (43.1%), 25 to 34 years(42.2%) and 35 to 44 years(39.5%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the chart’s subject and give a clear overview of the main contrasts: women’s activity is higher across most age groups, while the highest male figure is among 15–24-year-olds and the lowest among 35–44-year-olds. Most reported figures are accurate, and the detailed ranking of women’s results is useful. However, the overview could be more precise: women exceed men in every group except 15–24, a key comparison that is not stated explicitly. The phrase “especially between 35 to 64 years” is also less clear than identifying the three age groups in which women’s rates are above 50%. There is one data-label error: “55 to 54 years” should be 55 to 64. More direct comparisons between the sexes would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing women’s and men’s figures. This gives the information a clear progression, and signposts such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help readers follow the shift between the two groups. The lists are also arranged in a sensible order, generally from higher to lower values. To make the organisation more effective, connect the two series through direct age-by-age comparisons rather than presenting them almost entirely in separate lists. The final paragraph’s opening “While” creates an incomplete contrast structure, and the extra space before the following sentence interrupts the flow. Overall, the structure is clear, though some linking is mechanical and the comparison could be more integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “recorded,” “followed by,” and “in contrast,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary how the figures are described, rather than relying only on “percentage.” Some collocations are unnatural or imprecise, however: “maximum regular exercise” and “performed regular physical activity” are less natural than describing the proportion who “engaged in” or “did” regular activity. “This trend was followed by” is also awkward when introducing a ranking of figures, and “more regular physical activity” does not clearly express that women had higher participation rates. Aim for precise chart-reporting phrases and avoid wording that could suggest frequency rather than the percentage of people participating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and more developed structures, including the overview and the contrast introduced in the final paragraph. Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation issues persist. In “Overall, highest regular physical activity is recorded … where as lowest in men,” the superlative needs an article and the second clause lacks a complete verb structure. “Women showed an overall more regular physical activity” also has an awkward comparative construction. The final sentence begins “While 46.7 percent…” but does not complete the dependent clause with a main clause. Check sentence completeness, articles, and comparative forms, and use consistent punctuation around parenthetical figures. Greater control of these patterns would make the report smoother and more accurate.
