Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart illustrates the pproportion of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of women moved an upward trend from 25-34 to 55-64 while the men did physical activity in 15-24.
Looking at the details, the percentage of women who did excercise upto 47.7% in 15-24 ages and 48.9% in 25-34 but after that it increased rapidly 52.5% to 53% in 35 to 64 ages. however, it moved back the proportion nearly 47.1%. Therefore, It is observed that the ratio of female excercised increased in all ages except 15 to 24.
Turning to Male, 52.8% of male who went to gym in regular basis in 15-24, whereas after the figures continous droped as compared to female like 42.2 % in 25-34, 39.5% in 35-44 and 43.1% in 45-54 and slightly declined in after 65 year old.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant figures, including the female peak of 53.3% at ages 45–54 and the male low of 39.5% at 35–44. However, the overview is unclear: “the men did physical activity in 15-24” does not explain the overall pattern, and the claim that women’s activity increased “in all ages except 15 to 24” is inaccurate because the rate falls from 53% at 55–64 to 47.1% among those 65 and over. The male trend is also incomplete: after rising from 39.5% to 46.7%, it does not continue to decline. The response is 136 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 16 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Add a precise overview and complete the comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate detail paragraphs for women and men. This helps the reader follow the broad subject. However, progression within the overview is weak, and some linking expressions do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. For example, “Overall” introduces an unclear summary, while “Therefore” before “It is observed” adds little and makes the paragraph feel repetitive. The female paragraph also shifts from the rise to the final fall without clearly distinguishing the age groups. Improve the logical flow by grouping the main trends, using clear comparisons between the sexes, and ensuring each connector accurately signals contrast or sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the chart’s subject, including “percentage,” “age groups,” “increased,” and “declined.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “moved back” and “continous droped,” but these are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. Several spelling errors—“pproportion,” “excercise,” and “excercised”—are noticeable, and phrases such as “went to gym in regular basis” do not describe the chart naturally; it reports regular physical activity, not gym attendance. Aim for accurate, neutral chart language and check spelling. Reusing a small set of words is acceptable, but more precise verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” and “peaked” would make the comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a time clause beginning “after that.” However, errors in sentence structure and verb forms are frequent enough to make some statements difficult to interpret. For example, “the percentage of women moved an upward trend” lacks a grammatical construction for describing a trend, and “the percentage of women who did excercise upto 47.7%” is incomplete. In “after the figures continous droped,” the verb form is faulty, while “slightly declined in after 65 year old” has an unclear grammatical pattern. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “however” after a full stop and “It” after a comma. Practise complete comparative sentences and check verb forms, articles, and punctuation.
