Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main comparison accurately: women recorded higher activity rates in every age group except 15–24, and the figures for those aged 65 and over were close. It also correctly reports the male peak (52.8%) and female peak (53.3%). This gives the report a relevant overview and supports it with selected data. However, the overview repeats the same gender comparison and does not clearly summarise the broader trends: male activity falls to a low at 35–44 before rising, while female activity rises to 45–54 and then declines. The statement that women stayed “continuously ahead” from 25 to 65 and over is broadly accurate, but the age-group pattern is not developed with intermediate figures. A clearer overview and more balanced trend reporting would make the key features more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to age-specific details, and the information is generally easy to follow. The comparisons between the youngest and oldest groups help the reader understand the data. However, the overview repeats the same point in “females in all age groups” and “male population remained behind,” and the body paragraphs do not establish a particularly clear progression through the full set of age groups. Several sentence openings, such as “Whereas,” create fragments or awkward links, while “From 25 to 65 and over” compresses several categories without showing how the figures change. Grouping the age trends more systematically and using fewer repetitive comparisons would improve cohesion and progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “active,” “counterparts,” and “percentage stood at.” The writer also attempts less common expressions such as “engaged in consistent physical exercises,” although this is not a natural collocation for describing chart data. Some word choices are imprecise: “boys” and “girls” are less suitable than “men” and “women” for adult age groups, and “period” suggests change over time even though the chart compares age groups in one year. Spelling errors such as “Austrailian,” “alomst,” and “invovled” are noticeable but do not prevent understanding. More precise, natural chart language and careful proofreading would strengthen the vocabulary control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in the introduction and comparison structures such as “while” and “with women still taking the lead.” Meaning is generally clear, but some sentence construction and punctuation errors remain. “Overall, females” and “Whereas, girls” lack spaces after punctuation, and “Whereas male population remained behind…” is not a complete sentence in this context. The phrase “In younger generation, aged 15 to 24 the percentage…” also needs clearer article use and punctuation. Commas are frequently missing around introductory phrases, and spacing around hyphens and percentages is inconsistent. Building complete comparison sentences and checking articles, punctuation, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
