Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a basic overview, noting that women were generally more active and that men’s lowest figure was among those aged 35–44. It also accurately reports the male peak of 52.8% and the female figure of 47.7% for ages 15–24. However, the task is addressed only minimally: the response stops before describing the remaining age groups or the key pattern that women exceeded men in every group except 15–24. The claim that the overall majority of women exercised is also too broad without supporting comparisons. The response is 89 words, below the required 150. To develop the report, include the main figures and contrasts across the age groups, alongside a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a detail sentence. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and the use of “Overall” signals a summary. However, the report ends after one comparison, so there is little progression through the chart and most of the data is left unorganised. The overview and detail are not connected to further comparisons, and the paragraphing does not help group the age ranges or trends. Develop a fuller sequence—for example, summarise the overall gender pattern first, then compare the figures across age groups. Use linking phrases such as “by contrast” or “whereas” to make those comparisons clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart and its subject, with phrases such as “proportion,” “age groups,” and “highest proportion.” The writer also attempts some variation through “did physical activity” and “did exercise.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, including “males and females of Australia” and “on daily basis.” The chart reports regular activity, not necessarily daily exercise, so this wording also changes the meaning. “Give time period” is an inaccurate phrase for the year shown. Use standard chart language such as “Australian men and women,” “regularly exercised,” and “in 2010,” and vary verbs with accurate options such as “accounted for” or “recorded.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with a longer sentence attempting to combine a comparison of the male and female figures. Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in articles, sentence construction, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “majority of female” needs an article and a plural noun (“the majority of women”), while “from 45 to 54 years age group” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. The overview also begins with a lowercase “majority” after a full stop, and the final detail sentence lacks clear punctuation between the two figures. Practise accurate noun phrases such as “men aged 15–24” and build comparisons using complete clauses, for example, “The male figure was 52.8%, whereas the female figure was 47.7%.”
