Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the chart’s subject and attempt an overview by comparing the age groups with the highest and lowest activity levels. However, the overview is inaccurate: men’s highest figure is for ages 15–24, but women’s highest is 45–54; the lowest figures are men aged 35–44 and women aged 65 and over. The response gives no supporting percentages or further comparisons, so it reports only a small part of the chart’s main information. It is also far below the required 150 words: the response contains 58 words, with 9 words copied from the prompt excluded from the count. Include an accurate overview, then select and compare key figures across the age groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning with “Overall.” This gives the reader a simple progression from the chart topic to a summary. However, the response ends almost immediately, so there is no developed sequence of details or comparisons. The overview also places several comparisons in one sentence, and the missing space after “In contrast,” makes the transition less clear. To improve, organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two paragraphs comparing the figures, using clear links between related age groups.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary such as “proportion,” “age groups,” and “regular physical activity,” which makes the topic clear. However, the range is very limited because the response is so short, and some expressions are not natural or precise: “age bracket” is awkward in this context, while “became the highest age group” suggests a change over time rather than identifying the group with the highest percentage. “65 to over” is also an unclear way to name the final category. Use precise reporting language such as “the highest proportion was recorded among…” and “those aged 65 and over.” More varied terms for describing percentages and trends would strengthen the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes a correctly formed introductory sentence and a simple overview sentence, so the main message is generally understandable. However, the grammatical range is narrow, with little evidence of varied sentence structures. In “the men and women of age bracket 15 to 24 and 45 to 54 became the highest age group respectively,” the sentence structure does not clearly match the two groups to their respective age ranges. The phrase “men and women of age group 35 to 44 and 65 to over became the lowest age group respectively” has a similar problem, and the comma in “In contrast, the” needs a following space. Build clearer comparisons using separate clauses, and check agreement and punctuation.
