IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian men and female in different age groups who took part in physical activity in 2010

Overall, the graph clearly depicted that females were taking lead in the physical activity in the majority of aged groups. The highest peak of physical activity in female was observed in middle age group. While, males on other hand were only ahead of females in younger age group. Also could see a tight competition in elderly aged group.

Males are observed to be falling shorter than females in regular physical activity. However, they peaked at youngest

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview: women were more active in most age groups, while men led among 15–24-year-olds, and female activity was highest in middle age. However, the response only partially reports the data. It gives no figures, does not identify the female peak more precisely (45–54, at 53.3%), and does not describe the male pattern of falling to 39.5% at 35–44 before rising. The claim that men were ahead in the “younger age group” is broadly correct but needs a clear age range and comparison. The response is also 51 words below the required minimum, leaving the main features substantially underdeveloped. Add a fuller account of the trends and key comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and the beginning of a further paragraph. The overview also groups the main comparison between the sexes. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph starts to discuss male figures but ends abruptly at “they peaked at youngest,” so the reader cannot follow the intended point or see a complete account. Some linking is attempted with “Overall,” “While,” and “However,” but “While” is left as a fragment, and “Also could see” lacks a clear subject. Organise the response into a complete overview followed by paragraphs comparing the age-group data, and use linking words only where the relationship between ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “physical activity,” “majority,” and “observed,” and the general meaning is usually understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “highest peak” and “tight competition.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “females were taking lead” and “falling shorter than females” do not express the comparisons idiomatically, while “elderly aged group” is awkward. “Highest peak” is also redundant. Use standard chart language and precise terms for age groups and changes; this would make your comparisons clearer and more natural without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some simple sentences and attempts more complex structures, for example, “While, males on other hand were only ahead…” However, control is inconsistent. “While” is used as a sentence fragment, “Also could see” omits its subject, and the final sentence is incomplete. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “men and female” and “in the majority of aged groups,” and punctuation is missing at the end of the opening sentence. These problems sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. Build complete sentences with an explicit subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. A few accurate complex sentences would help show a wider range.
