Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response reports several figures accurately, including the male and female rates for ages 15–24 and 65 and over, and it correctly identifies the substantial gap at ages 35–44. However, it mainly lists age-group details rather than summarising the chart’s key patterns. There is no clear overview stating, for example, that men are more active only in the youngest group, while women lead in every other group, and that women’s rate peaks around middle age. The opening description is also imprecise (“percentage of age in Australian”), and the final comparison is described as a “little bit” difference without drawing out the broader trend. A concise overview and selective comparison of the main trends would make the response more complete and relevant.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information is arranged in a generally understandable sequence, moving through the age groups from youngest to oldest, and phrases such as “Furthermore” and “on the other hand” help signal relationships. The paragraph break also separates the introduction from the data. However, the response reads largely as a list of figures, with limited synthesis or progression toward an overall conclusion. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “At the age…” openings, and the final sentence does not function as a clear summary of the chart. Grouping the age ranges into meaningful comparisons—for example, the youngest group versus all older groups—would create stronger progression and make the cohesion less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses enough chart-related vocabulary to communicate the subject, including “percentage,” “age group,” “physical activity,” and “difference.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or informal, such as “percentage of age,” “show activity level,” “alot of difference,” and “stare at the people.” Spelling errors such as “differnent” and “differance” also reduce accuracy. These choices sometimes make the description less precise, although the figures and general meaning remain understandable. Use standard reporting language and vary the verbs used to describe data, such as “recorded,” “stood at,” and “was higher than,” while checking spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, and most comparisons can be understood. However, errors in sentence structure and agreement occur in examples such as “a bar chart which illustrate” and “female have 48.9 and male have 42.2.” Articles and phrasing are also awkward in “the age group between 25 to 34,” while punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and full stops. The repeated use of similar sentence patterns limits the range. To improve, check subject–verb agreement and use complete, controlled comparison structures, for example: “Women recorded 48.9%, compared with 42.2% for men.” More accurate complex sentences would make the data easier to follow.
