Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian male and female in various age groups who did exercise regularly in 2010.
Overall, women in different age groups did more physical activity than men except the youngest group of male.
For male, age group of 15-24 had done 52.8% exercise which was highest among all age groups of male and women did 47.7%. As soon as the age range increased, the percentages of male became lower than female and fluctuated in a moderate pace. It starts with 25 to 34 where men were 42.2% and women were 48.9%.
Further continued the trend age group of 45 to 54 where women reached their peak of 53.3% higher than all other groups and gender, males contributed 45.1%. However, the gap had been minimized in age group of 65 and over where women group showed a decline of 47.1% and men did a slightly lower than women of 46.7% despite increase
In conclusion, women did more exercise than men, however the percentage decreased in the older groups still more than male. Despite showing an increasing trend from 45 to 54 to 65+ males did comparatively lesser than women.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give an overview that women were more active in every age group except the youngest, which is the key comparison. Several figures are reported accurately, including 52.8% and 47.7% for the youngest group and 48.9% for women aged 25–34. However, some details are misreported: you give men as 45.1% for ages 45–54, but this is the figure for ages 55–64; the correct figure is 43.1%. The overview also says women’s activity decreased in older groups, although it rises to a peak at 45–54 before falling. Cover the middle-age pattern more precisely and ensure each figure is attached to the correct group.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to age-group details and a concluding statement. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the response. However, progression is not always clear: “Further continued the trend age group of 45 to 54” is difficult to follow, and the paragraph shifts between age groups without consistently explaining the comparison. The final paragraph largely repeats the overview rather than adding a clear synthesis. Group the data into meaningful comparisons—for example, the youngest group and the remaining groups—and use clear references to show which age range each figure describes.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age groups,” “fluctuated,” “peak,” “decline,” and “gap.” These choices make the topic clear, and some variation avoids relying only on “did exercise.” However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “fluctuated in a moderate pace,” “males contributed 45.1%,” and “women group showed a decline.” “Did exercise” is also repeated and is less suitable for formal chart description than “were physically active” or “engaged in regular physical activity.” Aim for accurate collocations and use terms such as “stood at” for figures and “the difference narrowed” for a smaller gap.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “except” and a relative clause in “where women reached their peak.” The main comparisons are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Australian male and female” needs plural nouns, while “For male” and “age group of 15-24 had done” have faulty article and verb patterns. In “men did a slightly lower than women,” the comparison is not grammatically complete; use “men’s figure was slightly lower than women’s.” The sentence beginning “Further continued the trend” also lacks a clear grammatical subject. Check articles, plural forms, and sentence structure, especially when introducing each age group.
