IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart compares the percentage of Australian men and women who participated in regular physical activities in the year 2010.

Overall, it is evident that more females than males were doing regular exercise in all age groups except for those who were 15-24. Furtheremore, almost an equal number of individual from both sexes exercised regularly after 64.

The percentage of men doing regular physical activities declined significantly as age progressed till 44, after which it showed a gradual incline. 52.8%, 42.2% and 39.5% men aged 15-24, 25-34 and 35-44 years exercised on ragular basis, respectively. 45-54 age group accounted for 43.1%, whereas around 45-47% of men who are 55-64 or 65+ participate in regular physical activies.

As per women, the percentage showed an upward trend along with advancing age till 54 years. Just under 48% and 49% womer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main contrast accurately: women recorded higher participation in every age group except 15–24, and the figures for people aged 65 and over were close. You also report the male figures and describe the broad fall to ages 35–44 followed by a rise. However, the response is incomplete: the final sentence stops at “Just under 48% and 49% womer”, so the women’s age-group pattern and key figures are not fully reported. The overview is relevant, but “almost an equal number of individual” is unclear for percentages, and the comparison of the older groups is not developed. The response is also 11 words below the required minimum. Complete the women’s account and include a concise comparison of the peak and lowest rates.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This gives the reader a sensible route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “after which,” and “As per women” signal the intended relationships. However, the final paragraph is cut off, leaving the discussion unbalanced and the progression incomplete. Some connections are also awkward: “Furtheremore” introduces a point that is not clearly linked to the preceding overview, while “As per women” is a mechanical transition. Use a complete final paragraph and connect the comparisons more directly—for example, contrast the female peak with the male low point—so cohesion feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “declined significantly,” “gradual incline,” “upward trend,” and “regular physical activities.” These choices help describe changes rather than merely list figures. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems: “Furtheremore,” “ragular,” “activies,” and “womer” are inaccurate, and “an equal number of individual” is not a natural way to compare percentages. “Participated in regular physical activities” is understandable, but “engaged in regular physical activity” is more concise and idiomatic. The unfinished final phrase also prevents the vocabulary in the women’s description from being assessed fully. Proofread carefully and choose precise terms such as “proportion” or “participation rate” when discussing percentages.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “except for” and a longer description using “after which.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are evident, however. In “almost an equal number of individual,” the singular noun does not fit the construction; “similar proportions” would be clearer. “45-54 age group accounted for 43.1%” needs an article (“The 45–54 age group”), and “men who are 55-64 or 65+ participate” shifts from past reporting to present tense. The final sentence is incomplete, so it cannot demonstrate accurate sentence control. Keep the past tense consistent for 2010 data and check articles, number agreement, and sentence completion.
