IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Most people may believe that information does not have any bound and is meant to be shared freely amongst other people and peers alike. On the contrary, some think that some information is something to be shared with great precaution. In the scientific research, business and academic world both groups are at a standstill on the topic.
Many scientists, businessmen and academics have always been in the favour that information is the highest form of currency in the world and should always flow from on great mind to another. This helps the communities in generating newer and better ideas, and to remove flaws from an already existing one through a collaborative effort.
Moreover, the main argument that this faction always provides is that, what if maths was never shared amongst peers and the new generation? Almost all form of our communication with modern world would have seized to exist. What if businessmen never shared information regarding the trades? It would seize the interaction between businesses needed to solve daily problems of their consumers. What if medicine was monopolized and never shares the secret about? These questions show the importance of communication of brilliant minds working in these fields.
On the contrary, people believe that some information is best locked behind huge patents and closed doors. This where the business secrets, monopolized technology and new discoveries too soon to be shared openly in the world lie.
My personal opinion is that information always helps people grow and communities to progress. But at the same time some information that could affect the greater good of mankind should always be protected especially in field like scientific research, business and academics.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the benefits of sharing information are supported by rhetorical questions, the counter-argument regarding why information should be protected is underdeveloped and lacks specific examples or depth. The conclusion is brief and could have been better integrated with the preceding arguments to provide a more comprehensive summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that both perspectives are explored with equal depth and that the reasoning is more fully extended with concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'At the same time' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated phrasing like 'highest form of currency' and 'monopolized'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'seized to exist' (should be 'ceased') and 'in the favour that' (should be 'in favor of the idea that'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the quality of the argument. Spelling is generally accurate, but the misuse of 'seized' for 'ceased' is a notable error.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'information does not have any bound' (should be 'bounds'), 'in the scientific research' (should be 'in scientific research'), and 'never shares the secret about' (should be 'never share their secrets'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences would be required for a higher band score.
