Student answer (Band 6.5)

Number of people believe that it is beneficial to share as much knowledge and information as possible in research of science, commercial enterprises, and academic spheres. While others argue that certain information is too precious or crucial to shared to be shared freely among the world. To my knowledge, I believe that it is fundamental to share knowledge, except in certain circumstances.

On the one hand, it is widely believed that particular facts of science and businesses are too valuable to share with others. That's because some information could be so precious that could support your country's economic opportunities. For example, your country's domestic health researchers found a cure to disease that once called incurable and if they wanted to sell the research of cure, they could make so much money. As a result, your nation will become more financially and economically prosperous than it was in the past.

On the other hand, I believe that, regardless of how valuable the knowledge is, it should be shared widely because people should be provided with information that could improve their quality of lives and live safely. For instance, if scientists found a way to fully remove impurities from any source of water and make it drinkable again, people should be informed and should be easily accessible. This leads to improvement on people' lives.

In conclusion, some people think that some knowledge in scientific research and academic world are too precious to be shared freely, while others are opposing this idea and arguing that every information should be shared with public. I am personally agree with the idea of information should be distributed widely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide examples, such as the cure for a disease or water purification, the discussion remains at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' behind these arguments. For instance, you could discuss the ethical implications of patenting life-saving medicine versus the necessity of profit to fund future research. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs. Ensure that your position is consistently supported throughout the essay rather than just stated at the beginning and end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'if they wanted to sell the research of cure'. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended antecedents.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'commercial enterprises', 'economic opportunities', and 'prosperous'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'Number of people believe' (should be 'A number of people') and 'every information' (information is uncountable). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and you rely on fairly simple descriptors. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing, such as using 'precious' and 'valuable' in close proximity without adding new nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the research of cure'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence construction ('some information could be so precious that could support'). Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack necessary prepositions. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and ensuring complex sentences are correctly structured will help improve your accuracy.
