IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
A number of people believe that it is beneficial to share as much knowledge and information as possible in scientific research, commercial enterprises, and academic spheres. While others argue that certain information is too precious or crucial to be shared freely among the world, I believe that it is fundamental to share knowledge, except in certain circumstances.
On the one hand, it is widely believed that particular facts in science and business are too valuable to share with others. That is because some information could be so precious that it could support your country's economic opportunities. For example, if a country's domestic health researchers found a cure for a disease that was once considered incurable, and if they wanted to sell the research on the cure, they could make a great deal of money. As a result, the nation would become more financially and economically prosperous than it was in the past.
On the other hand, I believe that, regardless of how valuable the knowledge is, it should be shared widely because people should be provided with information that could improve their quality of life and help them live safely. For instance, if scientists found a way to fully remove impurities from any source of water and make it drinkable again, people should be informed, and this information should be easily accessible. This would lead to an improvement in people's lives.
In conclusion, some people think that certain knowledge in scientific research and the academic world is too precious to be shared freely, while others oppose this idea and argue that all information should be shared with the public. I personally agree with the idea that information should be distributed widely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of proprietary research versus the humanitarian benefits of open access. However, the development is somewhat limited; the arguments could be extended further by discussing specific contexts like intellectual property rights or the ethical implications of withholding data. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the prompt rather than synthesising the main points. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, but the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a fully developed one.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, the transition between the second body paragraph and the conclusion is slightly abrupt. The progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is generally consistent. To reach a higher band, the student could vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the link between sentences is more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'commercial enterprises', 'intellectual property', and 'prosperous'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. For example, 'make a great deal of money' could be replaced with more academic collocations like 'generate significant revenue' or 'commercialise findings'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, but the vocabulary lacks the sophistication and precision required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student uses conditional sentences effectively, such as 'if a country's domestic health researchers found a cure... they could make a great deal of money'. Grammatical control is generally strong, with few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammar is accurate, the range of structures is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or inverted sentences, to demonstrate greater flexibility in their writing.
