IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that information related to scientific research, business, and education should be shared openly, while others believe that certain knowledge is too valuable or sensitive to be made freely available. I partially believe that information should generally be shared, although confidential and sensitive data should remain protected.

To begin with, sharing information can accelerate innovation and benefits to whole society. In scientific research should be open, so most of people access these information from different country and verify results and develop new technology more effectively. For instance, it was clearly found that during COVID-19, most of researchers shared their knowledge and information that was help to developed successful vaccine in less time. In similar to academic sector, freely access journals and educational resources, which improve learning opportunities.

On the other hand, not all information should be made for public because it may have commercial or security data. Businesses invest several money in development of new product, by sharing this information related research and development of product to reduced competition on market. Moreover, in nuclear technology or cybersecurity can not disclose valuable information due to could be misused if it goes on wrong hand. Therefore, it is essential to restricting this type of information share freely.

In my opinion, a balance approach is the most practical solution. Information that contribute education, healthcare related or scientific research should be share wisely. However, some security or national related information can not be disclose.

In conclusion. although open access information promote collaboration over the world that's help in increase technology and reduce repetitive work. In contrast, Some sensitive or valuable information must remain confidential.
